Shashi Tharoor Under Fire Kerala Congress Leader Says Hes No Longer With Us

Published: Jul 20, 2025

National News: Senior Congress leader and Thiruvananthapuram MP Dr. Shashi Tharoor has sparked a significant political debate within the Congress party with his recent statement prioritizing national interest over party loyalty. His remarks have drawn sharp criticism from within party ranks, especially from senior Kerala Congress leader K. Muralidharan, who declared that Tharoor will no longer be welcomed at party events unless he retracts his position.

Tharoor Sparks Row with ‘Nation is Paramount’ Statement

Addressing a public gathering, Dr. Tharoor stated: “For us, the nation comes first. Political parties are just a means to serve the country. If the government and the armed forces take steps in the national interest, we will support them openly.” Tharoor emphasized that military operations such as ‘Operation Sindoor’ should remain above partisan politics. He underlined that when national security and sovereignty are at stake, leaders must rise above party lines.

Kerala Congress Leader’s Sharp Rebuttal: 'Tharoor is No Longer With Us'

Reacting strongly, K. Muralidharan denounced Tharoor's position, saying:“Tharoor is no longer aligned with us. If he continues supporting the government instead of Congress principles, he should not be part of party platforms. As long as I am in Thiruvananthapuram, there is no need to invite him to any Congress function.” Muralidharan's remarks reflect an internal ideological divide — between traditional party discipline and the emerging belief that national interest can supersede party affiliations.

Is This an Ideological Rift or Rebellion?

Tharoor’s remarks have exposed what many perceive as a growing ideological tension within the Congress. While some members are adamant about toeing the party line, others, like Tharoor, advocate for a more nation-centric political philosophy. This ideological divergence raises a critical question: Is Congress prepared to accommodate voices that express independent views in the interest of national unity and security?

Tharoor Stands Firm: ‘I Am With the Nation’

Responding to criticism, Tharoor doubled down on his stance: “If supporting my country and army is considered indiscipline, then I will gladly repeat it. I remain a Congressman, but the nation comes first for me. I will always speak the truth, whether it is liked or not.” Tharoor’s firm response reflects not just personal conviction, but also a broader shift among certain political leaders toward issue-based nationalism rather than unconditional party loyalty.

Leadership Dilemma: Liberal Voice or Party Discipline?

Tharoor's globally respected image and liberal voice have left the Congress leadership at a crossroads. If the party acts against him, it risks contradicting its own liberal and democratic principles. If it remains silent, it may appear to tolerate dissent, potentially weakening internal discipline. This incident forces the Congress to reconsider its ideological framework: should it modernize to allow individual thought aligned with national interest, or stick rigidly to the party line?

Congress at a Crossroads: Nation First or Party First?

Shashi Tharoor's ‘nation first’ philosophy has ignited a debate that may shape the future of Indian politics. The Congress now faces a defining moment — whether to embrace 21st-century liberalism, which allows freedom of expression in matters of national importance, or to enforce conventional party loyalty. This episode has not only revealed a deep-rooted ideological rift within the party but has also triggered a larger national conversation: In a democracy, should allegiance to the country outweigh allegiance to the party?
