Bride and Groom Make Guests Bid for Dinner to Pay for HoneymoonSparks Online Outrage

Published: Jul 20, 2025

A newlywed couple has stirred controversy online after asking guests to bid on the first plate of food at their wedding reception. The unusual move shocked many and sparked a wider conversation about what’s acceptable when hosting a wedding.

A Surprise Announcement at Dinner

The story was originally shared by a user on X (formerly Twitter), who claimed to be present at the event. According to the post, after the wedding ceremony, the bride and groom gathered their guests and made an announcement. They said the first plate of food would be auctioned, and whoever won the bid would have their table served first.

They added that the money raised would be used to fund their honeymoon in Alaska. One guest reportedly paid $1,500 for the first serving of dinner. After that, the rest of the guests were served their meals as planned.

Social Media Reactions

The incident quickly went viral and drew heavy criticism. Many users found the idea offensive and inconsiderate. One person commented, “Turning your wedding into a fundraiser is just greedy. These are your friends and family, not customers.”

Another user added, “People already spend time and money to attend a wedding. Asking them to pay for food that’s already covered is unfair and embarrassing.”

Some Called It Smart, Others Called It Shameful

While a few people praised the couple for their creativity, saying it was a "clever way to raise money," the majority called it manipulative and inappropriate. A number of users said they would have walked out of the event immediately.

One viral comment read, “I would’ve grabbed my gift and left. No one should be made to compete for food at a celebration.”The identity of the couple and the authenticity of the story remain unverified, but the online debate continues. For many, it raised the question—how far is too far when it comes to wedding planning?
