Ask Question
How did Ranchi get its name, and what does it mean?

So there are two interesting folklores:

1) ARCHI

Archi means a bamboo grove which was used in earlier times by the Oraon tribe to fend evil spirit, which is why it was called Archi but the Britishers changed it to Ranchi. (Which doesn't make sense cause it would have been easier for the Britts to pronounce Archi, I reckon.)

2) RICI

local tale suggests the name comes from a local bird called "Rici" which was commonly found around the famous Pahari Mandir, also known as Rici Buru (hill of the kites), which then went on to become Ranchi.

Pick your favourite story and go with it. I like to believe it was Archi that later on became Ranchi - cause this place does have a lot of Bamboo forests too.
