China Builds Worlds Largest Navy While India Quietly Grows Its Sea Power

Published: Jul 04, 2025

China's People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) is currently the largest navy in the world. It has over 384,000 personnel and its fleet size has even surpassed that of the United States in terms of number of ships. However, its combat experience is less compared to the U.S. Navy. China possesses aircraft carriers, destroyers, and advanced submarines. It is continuously upgrading its navy to protect its maritime interests. The expansion of PLAN is establishing it as a decisive military power in the Asia-Pacific region.

America’s Blue-Water Power

The United States Navy is considered the most powerful in terms of technology, deployment, and capability. It has a global presence as a blue-water navy. Equipped with aircraft carriers, nuclear submarines, and warships, the U.S. Navy can launch immediate and effective operations in any maritime region. Its strategic reach spans every ocean in the world. Because of this immense strength, the U.S. plays a crucial role in global maritime security.

Russia’s Submarine Dominance

Russia owns the third-largest navy in the world. Its nuclear submarines are considered some of the most dangerous in existence. Russia has 64 submarines in addition to aircraft carriers, destroyers, and corvettes. About 150,000 naval personnel serve in its navy. Even after the collapse of the USSR, Russia has maintained its maritime military power. This navy is also actively operating in the Arctic region.

Indonesia’s Maritime Mission

Indonesia claims to have the fourth-largest navy, with a vast fleet of 331 ships. Its focus is on anti-submarine warfare, air defense, and amphibious operations. Indonesia is moving towards developing its navy into a blue-water force. Its strategic position in Southeast Asia makes it extremely significant from a geopolitical standpoint.

Sweden’s Technological Strength

Although small in number, the Swedish Navy is highly advanced technologically. It is known for its excellent operational efficiency in the Baltic Sea. The fleet includes corvettes, mine sweepers, and five advanced submarines. It is especially capable in mine warfare and coastal defense.

India Ranks Sixth

The Indian Navy has a fleet of 293 ships, including aircraft carriers like INS Vikrant The weaponry and extensive operational range of India's navy showing its strength. Equipped with two nuclear submarines, India maintains a strong presence from the Persian Gulf to the Strait of Malacca. The Indian Navy currently has about 70,000 active personnel.

Pakistan at 27th Position

According to the Global Firepower Ranking, Pakistan’s navy ranks 27th. It has only 121 ships and limited strategic capabilities. Compared to navies like India and China, the operational capacity of Pakistan’s navy is extremely limited. Despite this, Pakistan continues to work on monitoring and securing its maritime zone.
