Egypt Outpaces Trkiye in IranIsrael Crisis Mediation, Deals a Diplomatic Blow

Published: Jun 18, 2025

Iran-Israel Conflict: As tensions escalate between Iran and Israel, Egypt has taken a significant diplomatic step that has dealt a major setback to Türkiye's ambitions in the region. On Tuesday, Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty held separate phone conversations with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and the United States Special Envoy for the Middle East, Steve Witkoff. This move is being viewed as a major blow to Türkiye, which had been positioning itself as a potential mediator in the conflict. However, Egypt has now taken the lead in facilitating a possible ceasefire.

Türkiye’s Mediation Efforts Fall Short

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has been actively trying to mediate the Iran-Israel conflict over the past few days. He reached out to several world leaders, including U.S. President Donald Trump, and engaged with heads of state from Russia, the UK, Kuwait, Oman, and Sudan. Türkiye’s foreign minister also contacted his counterparts in other key nations, advocating for de-escalation. Despite these diplomatic efforts, Türkiye failed to move beyond initial talks, and Egypt has now stepped in with a concrete initiative to de-escalate tensions and pursue a ceasefire.

Egypt's Diplomatic Position

Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty emphasized the need for an immediate ceasefire and the pursuit of a diplomatic resolution. Speaking after the calls, he stressed that continued hostilities would not only destabilize the Middle East but could have global repercussions. He made it clear that military actions will not solve the crisis—only meaningful dialogue can pave the way for lasting peace.

"Violence Will Destabilize the Entire Region"

Abdelatty warned that failure to implement a ceasefire could spiral the situation out of control. He said rising violence would push the Middle East toward greater chaos, causing serious consequences for all parties involved. Egypt, he added, believes that negotiations and diplomacy are the only sustainable paths forward.

Türkiye’s True Intentions Questioned

In a significant revelation, Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei’s senior advisor, Ali Akbar Velayati, questioned Türkiye’s motives behind its eagerness to mediate. According to Velayati, Türkiye’s actual goal is to revive the “Zangezur Corridor”—a strategic route that connects Azerbaijan to Türkiye through Armenia’s Syunik province. Iran fears this corridor would undermine its geopolitical influence in the region, which is why Tehran had previously opposed the project. Analysts now believe that Erdogan is seeking to use improved relations with Iran to revive the corridor plan under the guise of peacemaking.
