International News: How much has the situation changed in Afghanistan since the Taliban came to power? How has the life of the people become? What is the status of women? And how much of America's aid is left? All these questions have been answered in the 68th and final report of the US monitoring agency Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction (SIGAR).
This report brings out the ground reality of the last four years in Afghanistan. This includes many serious concerns ranging from the denial of women's rights to a major cut in American aid.
Women suffer the most
SIGAR says that after coming to power, the Taliban have almost abolished the basic rights of Afghan women and girls. Banning girls from schooling, removing women from jobs, and reducing their presence in public places. All this has deeply hurt the freedom and self-reliance of women.
America's help also decreased
The report states that the US has provided only $342 million in aid to Afghanistan for 2025, while this amount was $968 million in 2023. That is, about 66% of the aid has been cut in two years. This has directly affected the daily lives of the Afghan people. Especially those who are already struggling with poverty and unemployment. The current Taliban government of Afghanistan has partially rejected the SIGAR report.
What was the result of 15 years of monitoring?
SIGAR was started in 2008 on the orders of the US Congress. Since then, the job of this organization was to monitor the US money given to Afghanistan and see whether it is being spent in the right place or not. In these years, SIGAR has several times pointed out the corruption, mismanagement, and security problems in Afghanistan. But experts believe that the ground impact of these reports was minimal. According to the SIGAR report, America has so far given a total of $3.83 billion in aid to Afghanistan.
