No drones, no missiles, North Korea gave Russia a 200yearold weapon to kill Ukraine

Published: Jun 06, 2025

International News: To help Russia in the Ukraine war, North Korea is now sending weapons that are neither modern nor technologically advanced. The surprising thing is that the weapons that North Korea has given to Russia were made before the 1980s and were only seen in parades or museums. The use of these old weapons in war is surprising experts around the world.

According to reports, North Korea has supplied Russia with 60 mm and 140 mm artillery (mortars). These are the same weapons that were usually seen only in DPRK military parades or museums. Now these weapons have been seen with Russian soldiers in the Kursk region on the Ukraine border.

Kim's weapons are now on the frontline

Russian military bloggers have shared some pictures in which Russian paratroopers (76th Air Assault Division) are seen with North Korean weapons. It is believed that soldiers from the DPRK (North Korea) are also involved in the operation there along with the Russians. According to military analyst Joost Oliemans, this is the first time these weapons have been seen being used in combat. He said the 60 mm mortars are probably copies of NATO weapons, but there are still doubts about their effectiveness. The 140 mm mortar was developed in 1981 and was first seen in a 1992 military parade.

Russia's troubles increased

Russia is facing a new problem due to the use of these weapons. North Korean weapons are of a different caliber (size of bullets), which does not match the Russian weapons system. This can cause problems in the supply chain and repair of weapons. Recently, news came that Russia has equipped one of its new artillery brigades with automatic cannons called Koksan received from North Korea. These are also weapons of old technology which were earlier believed to be only with North Korea.

An eye on Russia's friends

The world is keeping an eye on the growing military partnership between North Korea and Russia. Russia's reliance on these old weapons in the Ukraine war shows that it is facing a shortage of its conventional weapon resources. At the same time, DPRK is using this opportunity to strengthen its friendship with Russia.
