U.S. President Donald Trump had announced a 25% tariff on Indian imports. The new rule was supposed to take effect from August 1, but Trump has now postponed it by 7 days. This means the tariff will now come into effect from August 8. Since the announcement, there had been growing concern in India. The opposition began questioning the Modi government over the issue.
India Responds Firmly to Tariff Threat
In the meantime, the Indian government also took a strong stand and sent a clear message to the U.S. Union Minister Piyush Goyal told Parliament that the government would take all necessary steps in the national interest. Trump had issued the tariff order on Wednesday evening. In response, Goyal stated in Parliament that any decision made would be for the good of the country. Trump also mentioned that talks with India were still ongoing. Following that, the U.S. decided to push the tariff implementation date forward. Trump has previously expressed dissatisfaction with India’s tariffs, claiming that India collects the highest tariffs in the world. India and the U.S. are currently in talks over a trade deal, though no final agreement has been reached yet.
Tariff Implementation Has Been Delayed Before
Trump had earlier talked about imposing tariffs on several countries around the world on April 2. But at that time, he delayed the move by 90 days. Later, July 31 was set as the new date. Now, the implementation has been postponed once again to August 8.
