International News: Despite repeated US requests, India has continued buying oil from Russia, which has caused friction between the two countries. Recently, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio raised concerns, stating that India’s continued oil imports are indirectly supporting Russia’s war efforts in Ukraine.
In a radio interview on July 31, Rubio said that even though the US and India have strong ties, the oil trade with Russia is becoming a point of tension. According to him, India is buying oil from Russia mainly because it is cheaper due to international sanctions, which have reduced global demand for Russian oil.
Trump Also Expressed Disappointment
US President Donald Trump had earlier shown his dissatisfaction about the same issue. He said he was unhappy with India for continuing oil deals with Russia and even announced a 25% tariff on certain Indian products. Trump felt that India had other energy sources but was still choosing to trade with Moscow.
India’s Energy Needs and Economic Reasons
Rubio explained that India has huge energy needs and must find affordable sources like every other country. Russia provides oil, gas, and coal at cheaper rates, which makes it a cost-effective choice for India. That’s why New Delhi continues to import fuel from Russia, even if it upsets Washington.
Rubio also mentioned that the US understands India’s position but sees this issue as one of several challenges in their relationship.
Trade Disagreements Making Things Worse
Apart from oil, trade policies are also creating disagreements. The US is seeking greater access to India’s agricultural market, especially for products like dairy, soybeans, corn, and almonds. However, India has refused to lower import tariffs, saying that it would hurt millions of small farmers and rural families.
India argues that opening up to cheap, subsidized American products would destroy local markets. It is especially concerned about genetically modified (GM) crops, which India does not want to allow freely.
A Tough Situation
India maintains that it must protect its own economy and people. Its leadership believes that affordable fuel and secure food production are more important than foreign pressure. On the other hand, the US is frustrated that India is not supporting Western efforts to isolate Russia completely.
This situation has created tension between two important global partners. While both sides continue diplomatic talks, issues like oil trade and market access remain unsolved for now.
