UK Set to Tighten Visa Rules from July 22 Major Impact on Indian Immigrants

Published: Jul 02, 2025

World News: The UK government has announced sweeping changes to its visa system in a bid to curb the rising influx of foreign workers. A bill introducing stricter immigration regulations was tabled in the House of Commons on Tuesday. The move aims to reduce overall migration numbers by restricting low-wage employment visas and prioritizing highly educated and skilled professionals.

New Rules Effective from July 22, 2025

As per the government's roadmap, these new immigration rules will come into effect on July 22, 2025, following parliamentary approval. The changes are based on the proposals laid out in the Immigration White Paper released in May 2025. The primary objective is to limit the issuance of work visas for low-paying jobs and instead attract qualified and experienced talent to the UK.

Indian Workers Among the Most Affected

The policy shift is expected to significantly impact Indian immigrants, who form a large section of workers in sectors like social care, healthcare, and hospitality in the UK. Home Secretary Yvette Cooper stated that the changes are necessary to restore order in the immigration system. She pointed out that immigration has quadrupled over the last four years, which the government views as unsustainable.

Bachelor's Degree Now Mandatory, Salary Threshold Increased

Under the revised visa guidelines, a minimum qualification of a bachelor’s degree or equivalent will now be mandatory for all new work visa applicants. Additionally, the minimum salary threshold for eligibility has been raised, in line with the latest figures from the UK’s Office for National Statistics. However, skilled workers who are already residing in the UK will be exempt from these new conditions.

Ban on New Foreign Recruitment in Social Care Sector

A key highlight of the reform is the ban on new overseas recruitment in the social care sector, effective from July 22, 2025. This means foreign applications for jobs in this sector will no longer be accepted. However, social care workers already employed in the UK will be granted a three-year transitional exemption, valid until July 2028.

Tougher Visa Process and Language Criteria

The government has also announced that additional rules will be implemented by the end of 2025. These include:

  • Stricter English language requirements for all visa applicants.
  • Higher immigration skill charges for companies that hire foreign workers.

The UK’s new immigration policy reflects a clear shift toward a skills- and merit-based system, with a focus on long-term economic contributions. While it aims to control migration numbers, it also raises new barriers for foreign nationals—particularly those from countries like India—who have traditionally filled low-wage jobs. Going forward, competitive qualifications, strong language skills, and higher salary offers will be critical to securing a UK work visa.
