Machado has been the target of the Venezuelan government for the last year. He accused ruling President Nicolas Maduro of rigging the elections. The Nobel Committee praised his peaceful struggle and efforts to promote democratic rights.
Machado campaigned for former diplomat Edmundo González Urrutia and unfurled his fight for democracy, despite not previously contesting the elections. The Nobel Committee described this effort as an important step towards a democratic transition versus dictatorship in Venezuela.
