A flight operated by Air India coming from Kochi slipped off the main runway while landing at Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport on Monday morning. The incident happened during intense rainfall, but thankfully, no injuries were reported among crew and passengers.
Safe Exit for All Passengers and Crew
The flight, numbered AI2744, landed around 9:27 a.m. and slid off the wet runway shortly after touching down. Even though the runway was slippery due to monsoon showers, the pilots were able to safely guide the aircraft to a parking area. Everyone on board, including the crew and passengers, left the plane safely without any injuries.
Air India released a statement saying that the aircraft had skidded slightly because of heavy rain. The airline confirmed that the plane reached the gate safely and all passengers had disembarked. The plane will now undergo inspection and will not be used until it is cleared. Air India also said that the safety of those on board is always their top concern.
Airport Responds Quickly
Airport officials said that emergency teams were sent out immediately after the incident. A spokesperson for the Mumbai airport confirmed the event and added that the plane involved was arriving from Kochi. Although the runway suffered some minor damage, all passengers remained safe. To avoid delays and keep flights running, the airport quickly switched operations to its secondary runway (14/32), since the primary one (09/27) needed repairs.
Aircraft Grounded, Inspection Underway
The affected plane has been grounded and is now being checked by technicians. Meanwhile, airport teams are working to assess the damage caused to the runway and ensure it is safe before reopening it for use. The airport authorities emphasized that passenger safety continues to be their main focus. Despite the slippery conditions, quick action by the pilots and ground staff helped prevent a more serious situation.
