Amitabh Kant Joins IndiGo Board as NonExecutive Director

Published: Jul 03, 2025

IndiGo Airlines has brought on board a well-known name in Indian policymaking—Amitabh Kant. His appointment as a non-executive director on the board of IndiGo's parent business, InterGlobe Aviation Limited, was announced by the airline. This move is subject to approvals from regulators and shareholders.

Kant is well-known for his leadership in national projects such as Incredible India, Startup India, and Make in India. He is a retired civil servant and was the CEO of NITI Aayog and India’s G20 Sherpa. His vast experience in government and international platforms is expected to help IndiGo in its journey toward becoming a major global player.

Expertise in Transforming Policies and Projects

Throughout his career, Kant has led several important government initiatives. He played a key role in turning underdeveloped districts into high-performing regions through the Aspirational Districts Programme. As India’s G20 Sherpa, he represented the country in high-level global meetings, helping shape the direction of India’s presidency.

He also led the creation of the New Delhi Leaders' Declaration, which focused on solving global issues, improving India’s digital infrastructure, and pushing for reforms in climate and technology sectors.

A Vision for Global Growth

Vikram Singh Mehta, the chairman of IndiGo's board, shared his excitement about the appointment. He said Kant’s experience in managing large-scale projects would be a big advantage, especially as IndiGo looks to expand its global reach by 2030.

With Kant's guidance, IndiGo hopes to connect more countries, grow international tourism, and build India’s airports into major global travel hubs.

A Career Spanning Four Decades

Kant has worked in many top-level roles during his 40-year career. He was a member of the National Statistical Commission and the Director of the National Highways Authority of India. Additionally, he also played a major role in the development of Calicut Airport and the Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor.

Speaking about his new role, Kant said he is excited to join IndiGo and looks forward to supporting its mission to open new markets, enhance global connectivity, and boost India’s economy through tourism, trade, and investment.
