Delhi Set for a Revamp with 1.25 Lakh Crore to Ease Congestion and Clean Air

Published: Jun 05, 2025

Delhi, the bustling capital of India, is on the cusp of a transformative overhaul with the Central Government’s allocation of 1.25 lakh crore for infrastructure projects aimed at alleviating traffic congestion and improving air quality. This ambitious initiative, backed by Union Minister Nitin Gadkari and Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, seeks to address two of Delhi’s most pressing challenges: crippling traffic jams and hazardous pollution levels. By modernizing roads, expanding public transport, and implementing eco-friendly measures, the plan promises to reshape the city’s landscape and enhance the quality of life for its residents.

Tackling Traffic Congestion

Delhi’s roads are notorious for gridlock, with millions of vehicles clogging arteries daily, leading to lost productivity and commuter frustration. Key projects include the construction of underground tunnels, elevated corridors, and road overbridges, designed to reduce bottlenecks at critical junctions. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) will spearhead several initiatives, including signal-free corridors and highway expansions, to ensure smoother connectivity across the city and its neighboring regions.

Additionally, the plan emphasizes enhancing public transport to reduce reliance on private vehicles. Funds will support the expansion of the Delhi Metro, already a lifeline for millions, with new lines and stations to improve accessibility. The introduction of dedicated road corridors along areas like the Sahibi River and investments in pedestrian-friendly infrastructure, such as cycling tracks, aim to encourage sustainable commuting. These efforts are expected to cut travel times, ease congestion, and make Delhi’s roads more efficient, transforming the daily commute into a less stressful experience for residents.

Combating Air Pollution

The 1.25 lakh crore package includes measures to curb pollution through cleaner transport and environmental initiatives. A significant portion of the budget is allocated to expanding Delhi’s electric bus fleet, aiming to create one of the world’s largest. Charging stations for electric vehicles will be established across the city, promoting greener alternatives to fossil fuel-based transport.
Beyond transport, the plan includes projects to clean up the Yamuna River, a major pollution source, with decentralized sewage treatment plants to reduce water contamination. Investments in smart traffic surveillance systems will also help manage vehicle emissions by optimizing traffic flow. By combining infrastructure upgrades with eco-conscious policies, the government aims to lower Delhi’s pollution levels, making the city’s air safer to breathe and fostering a healthier urban environment.
