National News: North India is battling heavy rains and floods these days. The situation is getting serious in Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, and Delhi. Somewhere the rivers are flowing above the danger mark, and somewhere the water level of the dams is rising rapidly, increasing the danger.
Flood threat increased in Punjab
The water level of Punjab's Pong Dam has reached 14 feet above the danger mark. Bhakra Dam is also now only one foot below. Keeping safety in mind, its floodgates have been opened further. Due to this, the Sutlej and Beas rivers are in spate, and there is a threat of flood in the Rupnagar, Ludhiana, and Jalandhar districts. The embankments have become weak in many areas of Ludhiana. Army and administration teams are busy repairing them and building ring dams.
Increased pressure on Harike Pattan
The ever-increasing water pressure on Harike Pattan Headworks in the Tarn Taran district remains a matter of concern. The water released from here is worsening the situation in the villages of Ferozepur and Fazilka. So far 43 people have lost their lives due to floods in Punjab, while more than 16 hundred villages are affected. Lakhs of people and hectares of crops have been destroyed.
New trouble from Ghaggar river
The Ghaggar river flowing in Patiala, Sangrur, and Mansa districts has also become a cause of danger. Water has entered many villages of Patiala. People trapped here are being evacuated with the help of the NDRF and the army.
Landslides in Himachal and Jammu and Kashmir
In Himachal Pradesh, landslides are taking place due to continuous rain. Two houses were buried under debris in Kullu, in which one person died and many people are missing. At the same time, five people were injured due to a landslide in the Kishtwar district of Jammu and Kashmir. Many villages are submerged due to the flood in the Jhelum River, and people are being evacuated to safer places.
Delhi and Haryana also in trouble
The Yamuna River is flowing two meters above the danger mark in the capital, Delhi. Water has entered many low-lying areas, leaving thousands of people homeless and badly affecting traffic. The problem has increased further due to waterlogging in areas like Yamuna Bank Metro Station and Kashmiri Gate ISBT.
Due to the continuous release of water from Hathnikund Barrage in Haryana, the danger of flooding is deepening in districts like Yamunanagar, Karnal, and Sonipat.
