G7 Summit PM Modi Meets Six World Leaders, Trump Departs Amid Middle East Crisis

Published: Jun 17, 2025

International News: The G7 summit, currently being held in Kananaskis, Alberta province of Canada, has reached its final day. During his participation in the summit, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has held bilateral meetings with six global leaders. These include French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, and South Korean President Lee Jae-myung.

Trump Leaves Before Group Photo Amid Rising Tensions

Just ahead of the scheduled group photo session involving G7 member states and guest leaders, U.S. President Donald Trump unexpectedly left the summit and returned to Washington. According to the White House, his departure was prompted by escalating tensions in the Middle East. Trump commented, "I am not returning just because of the ceasefire — the situation is far more serious."

UK Prime Minister Reacts: Trump Uninterested in De-escalation

Reacting to Trump’s sudden exit, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer stated that Trump did not make any remark indicating his willingness to be part of a peace effort. “The G7’s official communiqué, in contrast, focuses on reducing tensions in the region,” he said.

Modi’s Dynamic Diplomacy Gains Attention

PM Modi described his meeting with Australian Prime Minister Albanese as “warm and constructive.” He also held significant discussions on trade, technology, and international cooperation with other global leaders including those of Mexico, South Korea, South Africa, and Germany. His active engagement has been widely acknowledged at the summit.

India’s Impactful Presence at the G7

Although India is participating as a guest nation, Prime Minister Modi's robust diplomatic outreach has clearly elevated India's position on the global stage. Also present at the summit were United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres and World Bank President Ajay Banga, emphasizing the global significance of the event.

G7 Joint Statement Calls on Iran to Abandon Nuclear Ambitions

The G7 countries expressed grave concern over the escalating conflict between Israel and Iran. In a joint statement, the bloc stressed that any attempt to ease tensions in the Middle East must include a ceasefire in Gaza. The leaders also reiterated that Iran must never be allowed to develop nuclear weapons.

Trump’s Presence and Exit Fuel Debate

On the summit’s opening day, President Trump attracted attention by wearing a lapel pin featuring both the American and Canadian flags — seen by many as a nod to his past controversial statements suggesting Canada could become the 51st U.S. state. Additionally, Trump once again referred to Russia’s removal from the G8 as a “strategic mistake.”
