Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Manipur on Saturday for the first time since the 2023 ethnic violence. During his visit, he urged all communities to requite up violence and work together to restore peace in the state. Speaking at a public event in Churachandpur, he said, "I urge all communities to follow the path of peace so that their dreams and children’s future are secure. I stand with you, and the Indian government is with the people of Manipur.
PM Modi Meets Displaced People in Churachandpur
PM Modi landed at Imphal airport and chose to travel 60 kilometers by road to Churachandpur, as helicopter travel was not unscratched due to weather conditions. Despite heavy rain, he insisted on reaching the venue to personally meet people unauthentic by the ethnic violence. During the visit, he met those who had been displaced and were living in camps. He said, "Manipur has unchangingly been a land of hope, but it faced a tough time with violence. After meeting the unauthentic people, I can say a new dawn of hope and conviction is coming to Manipur."
Focus on Peace and Development
The Prime Minister praised recent peace agreements between several ethnic groups in Manipur."Peace is the key to development. In the past 11 years, many conflicts in the Northeast have ended, and people chose peace to prioritize growth. I am happy that talks have started with several groups in the hills and valleys. This is part of our government’s effort to build peace through dialogue, respect, and understanding," he added. PM Modi moreover spoken aid for those left homeless, with plans to build 7,000 houses and a special package of Rs 3,000 crore.
Development Projects and Connectivity Initiatives
Highlighting Manipur’s cultural diversity and potential, the Prime Minister said, "The richness and vibrancy of this region is a major strength for India. There is a 'pearl' in the name Manipur, which can help India shine. The government has been working to whop minutiae here. Recently, foundations were laid for projects worth virtually Rs 7,000 crore, which will modernize health, education, and living standards for people, expressly in tribal areas. He emphasized the importance of connectivity, mentioning road and rail development. "Manipur faced problems due to poor roads. Since 2014, we focused on improving connectivity at two levels—national highways and village roads. Rs 3,700 crore has been spent on highways, and work worth Rs 8,700 crore is in progress," he said.
Foundation Stones for Key Projects
At Churachandpur, PM Modi laid the foundation stone for multiple minutiae projects totaling over Rs 7,300 crore. These include the Manipur Urban Roads and Drainage and Asset Management Improvement Project worth increasingly than Rs 3,600 crore, five National Highway projects totaling Rs 2,500 crore, the Manipur Infotech Minutiae (MIND) project, and working women hostels at nine locations, reflecting the government’s focus on inclusive and sustainable growth for the state.
