Business News: The Income Tax Department has given relief news for those who have not yet filed their Income Tax Return (ITR). The department has extended the last stage for filing ITR by one day. Now taxpayers can file returns till Tuesday, September 16, 2025, without any penalty.
According to the data of the Income Tax Department, increasingly than 7.3 crore ITRs have been filed till Monday, September 15. This number is increasingly than the 7.28 crore returns of last year. These returns are stuff filed for the towage year 2025-26, which is based on the income of the financial year 2024-25.
Why was the last stage extended?
The department said that on September 15, due to technical flaws and heavy traffic on the e-filing portal, many taxpayers had difficulty in filing returns. Moreover on Monday was the last stage for the installment of whop tax for the second quarter of the current financial year.
The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) said, 'For the convenience of taxpayers and to smoothen the process of filing ITR, the last stage has been extended to September 16, 2025.' The Income Tax Department moreover issued a guideline for taxpayers to resolve technical problems. This guideline proved helpful in most cases. Despite this, some taxpayers still complained of trouble accessing the portal.
The trend of filing ITR is constantly increasing
So far, increasingly than 7.3 crore ITRs have been filed. Last year, 7.28 crore returns were recorded in 2024-25, while in 2023-24 the number was 6.77 crore. These continuously show increasing figures that increasingly and increasingly taxpayers are filing ITRs on time every year.
The Income Tax Department has appealed to the taxpayers to file their returns by the last day and follow the guidelines of the department for any technical problem. With this, they will not have to pay any kind of fine.
