India Hits Back at NATO Over Russia Trade Warning Wont Bow to Pressure on Energy Needs

Published: Jul 17, 2025

India has taken a strong stand on the recent warning issued by NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) chief Mark Rutte, in which he threatened India, China, and Brazil with sanctions over their trade relations with Russia.

The Ministry of External Affairs called the statement a case of “double standards” and made it clear that India will not bow to pressure when it comes to meeting the energy needs of its people.

Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said during the weekly press briefing in Delhi, “We have seen reports on the issue and are monitoring the situation. Our priority is to fulfill the energy requirements of our people, which is of utmost importance to us.”

‘We Trade in Global Markets Based on Our National Interests’

Jaiswal strongly reacted to NATO’s remarks, stating that India conducts trade with global markets based on its own interests and takes current circumstances into account. He clearly stated, “We strongly oppose the double standards being applied in this matter.”

This statement came in response to NATO chief Rutte’s comment that countries continuing trade with Russia may face tough sanctions. Rutte had made these remarks during a meeting with U.S. Senators on Wednesday.

India has always prioritized independence and sovereignty in its foreign policy. The trade relationship between India and Russia has been longstanding, especially in the energy sector. Jaiswal clarified that India makes its decisions based on the opportunities available in global markets and the prevailing global conditions.
