Indias Legal System Needs Urgent Reforms, Says Chief Justice BR Gavai

Published: Jul 12, 2025

Chief Justice of India (CJI) BR Gavai has voiced serious concerns about the state of the Indian judiciary, emphasizing the urgent need for reforms. Speaking at the convocation ceremony of NALSAR University of Law near Hyderabad, he described the legal system as facing “unique challenges” and stressed that it is in dire need of improvement.

Prolonged Trials Continue to Burden the System

Justice Gavai drew attention to one of the most significant problems in the legal sector—unacceptable delays in court trials. He pointed out that some cases drag on for decades, resulting in long waits for justice. These delays are not just technical; they often lead to immense suffering, especially for undertrial prisoners who may remain in custody for years before their case is resolved.

“We have witnessed individuals proven innocent only after spending years behind bars,” he remarked, underlining the human cost of these inefficiencies.

Hope for Change Lies With the New Generation

Despite highlighting the problems, CJI Gavai expressed cautious optimism. He believes that the future of India’s legal system depends on the next generation of lawyers and judges. Encouraging the law graduates in attendance, he urged them to work with honesty and dedication to address the flaws in the system.

He advised students to select mentors based on values and ethical conduct rather than status or influence. He also encouraged them to seek higher education abroad through scholarships to avoid putting financial pressure on their families.

Leaders Call for Reform and Responsibility

The event saw the presence of several prominent legal and political figures, including Justice Sujoy Paul, Acting Chief Justice of the Telangana High Court, Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, and Supreme Court Judge Justice P.S. Narasimha.

The ceremony focused not just on graduation, but on the duty young legal professionals have to help reform the justice system. Justice Gavai’s message was clear: while the legal system is struggling, there is hope—if the upcoming generation commits to change with integrity and purpose.
