Indias Rising Influence in the Global South PM Modis Historic 9Day Tour

Published: Jul 02, 2025

National News: Prime Minister Narendra Modi today embarked on a 9-day official foreign tour that includes visits to five major countries in Africa and South America. This journey is a crucial effort to enhance bilateral ties and a strategic move to advance India’s leadership role within the "Global South."

Ghana: First Indian PM Visit in Three Decades

PM Modi’s visit will commence in Ghana from July 2 to 3. This marks the first-ever bilateral visit by an Indian Prime Minister and the first visit by India’s top leadership in over 30 years. Ghana, one of West Africa’s fastest-growing economies, is a major exporter to India—particularly of gold. During his visit, Prime Minister Modi will engage in bilateral talks with President John Mahama to explore fresh avenues of cooperation in defense, energy, economic growth, and strategic partnerships.

Trinidad and Tobago: Cultural Bonds with Strategic Focus

On July 3-4, PM Modi will visit Trinidad and Tobago—a country where nearly 45% of the population is of Indian origin. This will mark his first visit to the country and the first bilateral visit by an Indian Prime Minister since 1999. Notably, both Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar and President Christine Carla Kangaloo have Indian roots. This visit is expected to boost India’s diaspora diplomacy and further strengthen trade ties, with bilateral trade already reaching $341.6 million in the financial year 2024–25.

Argentina: New Chapters in Defense and Resource Collaboration

PM Modi will visit Argentina on July 4–5, marking the first bilateral visit by an Indian Prime Minister in 57 years. During his meeting with President Javier Milei, the leaders will discuss enhanced cooperation in defense, agriculture, mining, energy, and critical mineral resources—especially lithium. Argentina is also a key supplier of soybean and sunflower oil to India, making it an important economic partner in the region.

Brazil: A Platform for India at the BRICS Summit

From July 5 to 8, Prime Minister Modi will be in Brazil to attend the BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro. He is scheduled to meet President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and engage in multilateral discussions. Key topics will include reforms in global governance, the climate crisis, responsible use of artificial intelligence, and global health initiatives. Brazil remains India’s largest trade partner in South America, and the visit is expected to elevate strategic collaboration across multiple sectors.

Namibia: Strengthening Political and Economic Ties

On July 9, PM Modi will arrive in Namibia, marking his first visit to the country. He will address the Namibian Parliament and engage in discussions aimed at boosting bilateral cooperation. Trade between the two nations has now surpassed $600 million, and Indian companies have active investments in mining, diamond processing, and manufacturing industries.

PM Modi’s 9-day tour is more than just a series of diplomatic engagements—it reflects India’s expanding vision on the world stage. By focusing on the Global South, promoting strategic and economic cooperation, and nurturing cultural connections, this visit underscores India's growing global influence and its aspiration to serve as a voice for emerging nations.
