National News: Indian nurse Nimisha Priya has been sentenced to death in Yemen for the murder of a Yemeni man. She is likely to be hanged on July 16, and now the Indian government is trying hard to save her life.
Kerala CM Writes to PM Modi
Kerala’s Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has written a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, asking him to help stop the hanging. He wants the Indian government to speak with Yemen’s leaders as soon as possible.
Family and Groups Seek Help
Nimisha’s family, along with many organizations, has also asked the Indian government to step in quickly. A group called Save Nimisha Priya International Action Council is helping her and has even filed a petition in the Supreme Court of India.
Supreme Court Hearing Today
The Supreme Court will hear the case on Monday. A bench led by Justice Vikram Nath and Justice Sandeep Mehta will decide if the Indian government should use diplomatic efforts to save Nimisha.
What Happened in Yemen?
According to court papers in Yemen, Nimisha was accused of killing her business partner, Talal Abdo Mehdi, in 2017. She gave him an injection, which caused his death, and later cut his body and threw the parts in an underground tank.
Nimisha’s family says she only wanted her passport back, which Mahdi had taken from her. They claim he died from an overdose of the injection. Still, the court gave her a death sentence. Her appeal was rejected, and the President of Yemen also refused to forgive her.
No Blood Money Accepted
In some cases, the victim’s family can forgive the accused if they are paid money, known as blood money. But in Nimisha’s case, Talal Mehdi’s family has refused to take any money or forgive her.
Who is Nimisha Priya?
Nimisha had been working as a nurse in Yemen since 2008. She got married in 2011 and moved to Yemen with her husband, Tommy Thomas. In 2014, due to the civil war in Yemen, her husband and daughter came back to Kerala, but she decided to stay.
