Punjab Gears Up for PestFree Cotton Mann Governments Strategy Rekindles Farmer Confidence

Published: Jul 01, 2025

National News: The 2025 farming season is bringing new hope to cotton (Narma) farmers in Punjab's Malwa region. The notorious pink bollworm (Sundi) and whitefly, which have long plagued the cotton crop, appear to be under control this year. Thanks to timely intervention and vigilant monitoring by the Punjab government and the Department of Agriculture, the threat of pests has significantly diminished, raising expectations for a record cotton yield.

Government’s proactive approach halts pest outbreak

Led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, the Punjab government implemented a comprehensive and proactive strategy to safeguard the cotton crop. Recognizing the potential threat early on, the administration ordered the removal of weeds that support the lifecycle of harmful pests. In coordination with MNREGA workers and other concerned departments, the Agriculture Department undertook extensive field cleaning and pesticide application to eliminate pest breeding grounds and destroy any remaining infestations.

Agricultural teams mobilized across Malwa, farmers’ confidence rebounds

Cotton cultivation has expanded significantly this season across key districts in Punjab’s Malwa region, including Mansa, Bathinda, Faridkot, and Sri Muktsar Sahib. In Mansa alone, over 27,621.5 hectares have been brought under cotton, marking a notable rise from previous years. With consistent on-ground support from agricultural teams and visible government efforts, farmers are regaining faith in cotton farming and showing renewed optimism about the crop’s prospects.

Ongoing crop management training and pesticide spraying

Agriculture Department teams are actively visiting villages to educate farmers about pest control, seed selection, and regular crop inspection. Simultaneously, pesticide spraying continues across the region to eliminate any remaining pests and their eggs. Officials claim that the likelihood of a major infestation by pink bollworms or whiteflies this year is negligible.

Assurance from the Agriculture Department: 'White Gold' is safe

The Department has assured farmers that their “White Gold”- local term for cotton—will remain protected until it is fully harvested. Officials have pledged continued vigilance and support, stating that effective control measures are already in place and no pest threat currently looms over the crop.

Prosperity returns to Malwa’s cotton fields

After years of declining interest in cotton cultivation due to pest damage, farmers are once again turning to the crop with optimism. Government efforts and scientific interventions have brought back a sense of security and promise. Agricultural experts believe that, if favorable weather and vigilant monitoring persist, the Malwa region may witness a historic bumper crop of cotton this year.
