National News: Jasbir Singh, a popular Punjabi YouTuber behind the channel “Jaan Mahal” with over 1.1 million subscribers, was arrested on June 4, 2025, by Punjab Police for alleged espionage tied to Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI). A resident of Mahlan village in Rupnagar, Singh’s vibrant vlogs on travel, lifestyle, and local culture masked a deeper web of connections, including links with Haryana-based YouTuber Jyoti Malhotra, arrested last month for similar charges. His detention by the State Special Operations Cell (SSOC) in Mohali has sparked concerns about social media being exploited for covert activities.
Alleged Espionage Network
Singh’s arrest stems from his alleged ties to a Pakistan-backed spy ring. for espionage. After Malhotra’s arrest, Singh allegedly tried to erase digital evidence, prompting deeper forensic scrutiny.
Connection to Jyoti Malhotra
Malhotra, arrested in Hisar for allegedly sharing sensitive information with ISI operatives, had traveled with Singh to Pakistan, as seen in old videos of them exploring Lahore’s street food scene. Their frequent communication, including WhatsApp chats with Pakistani handlers, suggests a coordinated effort. Punjab DGP Gaurav Yadav noted that both used their YouTube platforms to disguise their activities, highlighting the evolving use of influencers in espionage.
Unraveling a Larger Threat
The arrests of Singh and Malhotra are part of a broader crackdown, with 12 individuals detained across Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh since May 2025. The SSOC, alongside the NIA and Intelligence Bureau, is probing the full scope of this terror-linked network. Singh’s case underscores the dangers of social media as a tool for espionage, prompting calls for stricter digital oversight to safeguard national security.
