Fluent Gill stuns England! Scores his 7th test ton

Published: Jul 03, 2025

Sports News: Indian skipper Shubman Gill scored yet another classy century on the first day of the second test. After having to bat first, India started cautiously with KL Rahul and Yashaswi Jaiswal. The former was dismissed for just 2 runs by Chris Woakes. Jaiswal, on the other hand, scored 87 runs before getting caught behind off Ben Stokes. Skipper Gill came to the crease and looked in good touch from ball one. After having played a fine knock of 147 in the previous Test, the No. 4 batter was on song once again.

Skipper Shubman's super show

The right-handed batter notched up his seventh test ton and the second in two matches against England. Coming into bat in a tricky situation at 95-2 just before lunch, Gill stitched an important 66-run stand with his fellow teammate, Jaisawal. This was followed by a 47-run stand with the vice captain, Rishabh Pant. The situation became tricky when India lost both Pant and Nitish Kumar Reddy in consecutive overs.

Left stranded on 211-5 at one end, the skipper took the responsibility on his shoulders, alongside the all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja. Both added 99 runs and took India to 311-5 after the end of Day 1. Gill is currently not out on 114, including twelve 4s.

Gill creates a new record!

Following his special century at Edgbaston, Gill created a new record. He became the first Indian batter to score 100 runs on the opening day on two different occasions (the previous one being his 147 at Leeds last week). He also added himself to the list of Indian batters who scored a ton in their first two tests as a captain. The list includes some legendary names like Virat Kohli, Sunil Gavaskar, and Vijay Hazare.

Jadeja's calmness steadies India's ship

All-rounder Jadeja came in to bat after two wickets fell in consecutive overs. Alongside him, Skipper Gill, India's veteran test player, played a fine knock. Although he has scored runs quickly, the southpaw looked in great control. He is currently batting at 41* off 67 balls, including five 4s.
