In the Midst of IPL Hype, New Zealand Cricket Makes a Stunning Contract Call

Published: Jun 04, 2025

Sports News: Amid the excitement and spectacle of IPL 2025, as the global cricketing spotlight remains fixed on India’s vibrant league, the New Zealand Cricket Board (NZC) has made a surprising decision that has left fans stunned. The board has announced the central contract for 2024-25, in which 20 players have been selected. But the biggest discussion is about the four new faces who got this honor for the first time and those veteran stars who were left out.

Four new faces, the foundation of the future

The players who have been given a place in the central contract for the first time by NZC this year are Mitch Hay, Muhammad Abbas, Jack Foulkes, and Aditya Ashok. These four players have performed brilliantly for New Zealand in the last year and have left no stone unturned to prove themselves.

Young all-rounders like Mitch Hay and Jack Foulkes step onto the field with remarkable confidence, while Muhammad Abbas brings a versatile bowling attack and Aditya Ashok adds sharpness with his crafty leg spin. These players are no longer just domestic stars but are ready to become New Zealand's new identity at the international level.

NZC's new approach

New Zealand Cricket CEO Scott Wennink gave a big message with this announcement. He said, "We are looking into the future. Our goal is to give opportunities to players who have the potential to become the backbone of New Zealand in international cricket in the future. Mitch, Muhammad, Jack, and Adi have recently proved that they are ready for challenges."

It is clear from this statement that the board now wants to invest in young talent by breaking away from tradition.

Absence of veterans made headlines

However, the absence of four big names in this central contract has surprised the fans. This time, seasoned campaigners like Kane Williamson, Devon Conway, Finn Allen, and Lockie Ferguson have been excluded from the central contract list. The board says that these players are on the radar of NZC, and they may get a chance again in the future based on their performance.

All players included in the contract

The list of players who got the central contract includes Aditya Ashok, Michael Bracewell, Tom Blundell, Mark Chapman, Jacob Duffy, Jack Foulkes, Mitch Hay, Matt Henry, Kyle Jamieson, Tom Latham, Daryl Mitchell, Muhammad Abbas, Henry Nicholls, Will O'Rourke, Glenn Phillips, Rachin Ravindra, Mitchell Santner, Ben Sears, Nathan Smith, and Will Young.

A beginning of new thinking

This move of New Zealand Cricket is not just a change but the beginning of new thinking. While the big teams of the world continue to rely on old names, the Kiwi board has made it clear that performance is now the priority. In the coming months, it will be worth seeing what these young stars do on the field and whether the veterans are successful in getting their place again.
