Maxwells Emotional ODI Exit I Was Disappointing the Team, Says Legend

Published: Jun 02, 2025

Australian cricket icon Glenn Maxwell announced his retirement from One Day International cricket, citing feelings of “disappointing the team” after a string of underwhelming performances. The 35-year-old all-rounder, a hero of Australia’s 2015 and 2023 World Cup victories, shared his decision through Cricket Australia, choosing to focus on T20Is and domestic leagues like the Big Bash.

A Heartfelt Decision

Maxwell’s retirement follows Australia’s early exit from the 2025 Champions Trophy, where his form dipped, averaging just 14.3 runs in four matches. “I was disappointing the team and myself,” he said in a statement, reflecting on his struggle to replicate his explosive batting in ODIs. Known for his 201* off 128 balls against Afghanistan in the 2023 World Cup, Maxwell’s decision to step back was driven by a desire to let younger players shine. X users praised his honesty, with one posting, “Maxi’s humility is as big as his sixes.”

A Stellar ODI Legacy

Maxwell leaves ODIs with 3,698 runs at an average of 34.24 and a strike rate of 126.23 across 138 matches, alongside 70 wickets with his crafty off-spin. Fans on X reminisced, with one tweet stating, “Maxwell redefined ODI batting—those helicopter shots!” His versatility as a fielder and bowler made him a cornerstone of Australia’s golden era.

Focus on T20 and Beyond

Maxwell, who will continue playing T20Is, aims to lead Australia at the 2026 T20 World Cup.  At 35, he believes T20 suits his high-energy style better. X posts speculate on his T20 future, with one user noting, “Maxwell in T20s will still be a game-changer!”

Impact on Australian Cricket

Maxwell’s exit leaves a gap in Australia’s ODI middle order, with selectors now eyeing players like Cameron Green. The timing, post-Champions Trophy, signals a transition for the team. Fans on X are divided, some calling it “the end of an era,” others optimistic about new talent. Maxwell’s candid farewell, rooted in team-first values, cements his legacy as a selfless legend in Australian cricket
