Iran Turns to Russia After US Strikes Putin Aide Hints at Nuke Support

Published: Jun 22, 2025

Iran has reached out to Russia for support in the wake of recent US airstrikes on Iranian nuclear targets.  Dmitry Medvedev, the former president of Russia, claimed that some nations are now prepared to provide Iran with nuclear weapons. In a series of posts, Medvedev said the American attacks on facilities in Isfahan, Natanz, and Fordow failed to cause serious damage and might have only made Iran more determined.

Iran's nuclear fuel infrastructure was mostly unharmed, he said. He went on to say that uranium enrichment and perhaps nuclear weapons development will go on.  Medvedev also suggested that the US attack had unintended consequences, making Iran’s leadership stronger at home by uniting its people.

Without naming any specific countries, Medvedev said, "Several nations are now prepared to directly give nuclear warheads to Iran." He blamed the US for escalating tensions and said that Iran's regime has only become more powerful as a result.

Trump Criticized, Tensions Escalate

Medvedev also took aim at Donald Trump, calling him a “president of peace” turned warmonger. He said that Trump had dragged the US into a new conflict, making his chances of winning a Nobel Peace Prize meaningless. Medvedev warned that the US might now get involved in a ground war and pointed to growing instability in the region, especially in Israel.

He said explosions are hitting Israeli cities, and fear is rising among the public.  Abbas Araghchi, Iran's foreign minister, said that he would visit Moscow to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin.  He emphasised that Iran and Russia have a solid alliance and that they work closely together on important subjects.

Russia Signals Support, Conflict Deepens

Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov had earlier spoken to Araghchi, criticizing Israel’s military actions and promising Russia’s help in calming the situation. While the US claimed its airstrike was limited and not meant for regime change, tensions remain high.

In response, Iran launched missile and drone strikes on Israel. This led to further retaliation, raising fears of a wider conflict. Iran insists its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes, but the situation continues to grow more serious.
