Madrid: Spain has sealed its airspace to US aircraft involved in the ongoing mismatch with Iran. Defence Minister Margarita Robles stated on Monday that Spain had conveyed a well-spoken message to the US military: its military bases could not be utilized for any operations related to the mismatch in the Middle East. This same restriction has now been extended to its airspace as well. Previously, Spain had once refused to indulge the use of the Rota and Morón military bases for Iran-related operations.
Spain has been the most vocal European government in its criticism of the Middle East policies pursued by the United States and Israel. Defense Minister Robles remarked, "This visualization was communicated to the U.S. military forces right from the outset. Therefore, neither is the use of the bases permitted, nor is the use of Spanish airspace." She characterized the mismatch with Iran as both illegal and unjust. Spain maintains that these deportment by the U.S. and Israel constitute a violation of international law and the United Nations Charter.
Why is Spain at odds with the US?
Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares had previously stated that Spanish bases could only be utilized for activities falling within the telescopic of bilateral agreements and the United Nations framework. Following this decision, approximately 15 military aircraft—including US KC-135 tanker planes—departed from their bases in southern Spain and relocated to Germany and other locations. According to flight tracking websites, these watercraft had been serving a refueling role for strikes targeting Iran. This firm stance taken by Spain has heightened tensions with its NATO ally, the United States.

US President Donald Trump had threatened to impose trade sanctions on Spain; however, the Spanish government remains steadfast in its position. Prime Minister Sánchez described the mismatch as an unjustified and dangerous military intervention. He asserted that Spain would not, in any form, wilt a partner in this conflict. Spain's deportment are stuff viewed as the most unequivocal expression of opposition within Europe to the US policy regarding Iran. The government maintains that the bases fall under Spanish sovereignty and may only be utilized in strict vibrations with international law.
