Pakistan’s Army Chief, General Asim Munir, faced strong criticism and embarrassment during his visit to Washington, USA, over the weekend. A protester openly heckled him outside the Four Seasons Hotel in the US capital, shouting slogans against his role in Pakistan’s politics.
The incident was captured on video and soon went viral on social media. The person who protested was believed to be a supporter of former Prime Minister Imran Khan. He accused Munir of ignoring human rights and using his power unfairly against opposition parties in Pakistan.

The protester raised his voice outside the hotel and called Munir a “dictator” and a “mass murderer”. He held up a digital board that displayed messages like “Asim Munir: Mass Murderer” and “Democracy dies when guns speak!”
He repeatedly demanded “freedom for Pakistan” and civilian supremacy, adding that Munir was trying to silence opposition voices back home. His actions reflect growing dissatisfaction amongst the diaspora about the role the army is playing in their country’s politics.
Rising Criticism and Rising Tensions
This incident highlights the growing criticism Munir is facing from people outside Pakistan for his crackdowns against Imran Khan and his party. The US chapter of Khan’s party called for a large movement against what it described as a “military dictatorship masked as civilian rule”.
General Munir, who was recently given the ceremonial title of Field Marshal, was in the USA reportedly at the invitation of US Centcom’s commander. However, the White House later denied extending any official invitation. Some reports also claim a ruling party MP in India, Nishikant Dubey, accused opposition parties in his country of spreading “Pakistani propaganda”.
Critics say Munir’s promotion to field marshal is meant to protect him from legal action, especially after doubts were raised about his role following disputes between India and Pakistan. His visit has raised questions about the growing influence of the army in Pakistan’s politics and the future of civilian governance in the country.
