Thai PM Partongtarn Shinawatra Suspended Over Leaked Phone Call Remarks

Published: Jul 01, 2025

International News: In a major political development, Thailand’s Constitutional Court has temporarily suspended Prime Minister Partongtarn Shinawatra from her duties following accusations of making inappropriate comments against her own citizens during a private phone conversation. The court issued the ruling while hearing a petition, stating that Shinawatra will remain suspended until the conclusion of a formal investigation.

Court Terms PM’s Remarks Unconstitutional

According to the Associated Press, the court observed that the Prime Minister’s conduct was unbecoming of the high office and violated the principles of constitutional morality. The remarks were seen as offensive and damaging to the dignity of Thai citizens, prompting the judiciary to take swift action.

Investigation Timeline: 15 Days for Report Submission

The Constitutional Court has directed the investigative agencies to thoroughly probe the matter and submit their findings within 15 days. A final decision on Shinawatra’s political future will be made once the investigation report is reviewed.

Former PM Father Also Under Scrutiny

Adding to the turmoil, local media reports suggest that Shinawatra’s father—himself a former Prime Minister of Thailand—is also under the scanner. He faces revived allegations related to abuse of power during his tenure in 2016, specifically accusations of using royal authority to suppress political dissent. Legal proceedings may soon be initiated in that matter as well.

Leaked Call With Cambodian Leader Sparked Uproar

The controversy erupted after a private phone call between PM Shinawatra and Cambodian Senate President Hun Sen was leaked to the media. During the conversation, Shinawatra allegedly referred to the Thai military general stationed at the Cambodia border as her "enemy" and addressed Hun Sen as "Uncle". This personal comment, made amid already strained border relations, has been viewed as diplomatically damaging.

Public Apology Not Enough to Avert Legal Action

Though Shinawatra later issued a public apology for her remarks, the issue had already reached the Constitutional Court. The court deemed the incident to be a serious breach of ethical conduct and decided to suspend her from office pending further inquiry.

Political Landscape in Thailand Shaken

Thailand’s political atmosphere, relatively stable in recent months, has been jolted by the suspension. Opposition parties have welcomed the court’s decision as a step towards safeguarding democratic values, while Shinawatra’s supporters allege that the move is politically motivated.
