National News: The G-7 summit is going to be held in Canada from 15 to 17 June this month, in which Prime Minister Narendra Modi will also participate. Canadian Prime Minister Mark J. Carney invited PM Modi over the phone on Friday, which Modi accepted happily and informed about it through social media. The two leaders are also expected to meet during this meeting, which can become an opportunity to end the tension released between India and Canada for the last two years.
PM Modi invited as special guest in G-7 meetings
PM Modi has been invited as a special guest at every G-7 conference since 2019, and he has been participating in it every time. Till the past days, the Congress had made an issue that India had not been invited for this meeting, but now this confusion has gone away after Modi's invitation.
PM Modi's social media message
On Friday evening, PM Modi wrote on the social media site X (formerly Twitter), "I am happy to talk to Canada's PM Mark J. Carney. I congratulated him on the recently concluded election and thanked him for the G-7 meeting to be held in Cananaskis in June. India and Canada are two vibrant democratic countries that will work together for strong relations between my people. I am waiting for his meeting during the conference."
The attitude of the new government of Canada is different from the east
This message from PM Modi clearly shows that the attitude of the new government of Canada is different from the government of former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Khalistani supporters had urged the Canadian government not to invite the PM of India to the G-7 meeting, but Karney did not do so. It is clear that the new government is keen to improve the relationship between the two countries. Earlier, External Affairs Minister S.K. Jaishankar and Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand had a phone conversation to normalize bilateral relations.
India-Canada relations were deteriorated
The relations between the two countries in September 2023 deteriorated when the then PM Trudeau alleged in Parliament that India's agencies were killing Canadian citizens. Especially India was blamed for the murder of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. Following this allegation, diplomatic tension between the two countries deepened and several diplomats were expelled.
India also reduced the number of people working in the High Commission of Canada. India said that Trudeau's government is making false allegations against India due to political reasons. At the same time, pro-Khalistan political parties are active in Canada, which are also considered influential in this dispute.
Possible improvement signs
It is believed that in the middle of this month, the meeting of Modi and Carney can bring back India-Canada relations again. Very few Indian Prime Ministers have visited Canada in history. Modi will become the first Indian Prime Minister to visit Canada twice this time. Earlier, former PM Manmohan Singh visited Canada in 2010.
