Air India Plane Crash DNA Test Confirms Identity of 163 Victims, 124 Bodies Handed Over to Families

Published: Jun 17, 2025

National News: A few days after the horrific Air India aircraft accident in Ahmedabad, in which 270 people lost their lives, officials on Tuesday confirmed that 163 dead had been identified through DNA testing. So far, 124 bodies have been handed over to the family members for the funeral. According to officials, due to the intensity of the collision and the fierce fire, many bodies were completely scorched or mutilated, which made the visual identity no longer possible. Forensic teams are working continuously so that the remaining bodies can also be identified and the victim families can get closure. This process is sensitive and taking time, but officials are saying that every effort is being made so that this work can be completed soon with accuracy and sensitivity.

Dr Rakesh Joshi, Medical Superintendent of Ahmedabad Civil Hospital, told a news agency, "So far 163 DNA samples have been matched, and 124 bodies have been handed over to the relatives. The remaining remains will also be handed over soon." Out of 71 people injured in the accident, 9 are still undergoing treatment, while 2 have died during treatment.

Only Four BJ Medical College Students Died: False Reports Denied

Dr Joshi denied reports that claimed that B.J. Two more MBBS students of the medical college have died. He clarified: "I want to clarify that only four students have been killed in the accident, and there has been no change in this number. Apart from this, two doctors also died – one was also in the plane, and the other doctor came from Surat, who came to the hostel to meet his sister, who is a resident doctor here."

Dr Joshi hoped that the DNA profile of all the victims would be completed by Tuesday evening or Wednesday morning.

Aircraft accident: 241 passengers died

The horrific accident occurred at 1:39 pm on June 12, when Air India's Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner aircraft hit a medical college campus shortly after flying from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad. A total of 242 people were aboard the aircraft, out of which 241 died. Apart from this, 29 others, who were on the ground, were also killed in this accident. On Sunday, officials said the cockpit voice recorder (CVR) has been recovered from the crash site. Black box information will prove to be important in finding out the causes of this fierce accident.
