Amid Wreckage in Ahmedabad, Forensic Science Becomes the Final Hope

Published: Jun 15, 2025

National News: After the horrific Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, the atmosphere of the Civil Hospital is filled with pain, sorrow, and hope. Dozens of people lost their lives in the accident, and most of the bodies were burnt so badly that it has become impossible to identify them through traditional methods. In such a situation, DNA testing is now being used to identify the dead. The forensic team and medical staff are engaged in this challenging task day and night.

The burning fuel swallowed everything

The horror of this accident can be gauged from the fact that there were 125,000 liters of jet fuel in the plane, which turned into a fierce fire at the time of the accident. The intensity of the fire burnt most of the bodies to such an extent that it became almost impossible to identify them with the eyes. Neither clothes nor any personal belongings that could serve as a clue were left.

DNA test is the last option

The DNA identification work at Ahmedabad Civil Hospital is now the only ray of hope. Additional Medical Superintendent of the hospital, Dr. Rajnish Patel, said that so far DNA samples of 19 bodies have been successfully matched. One body has been handed over to the family, while the process has started for the other two as soon as the identity was confirmed.

Dr. Patel clarified that this process is slow, but there is no room for error in it. He stated that extreme caution is essential during DNA testing. Even a single mistake will not only be serious scientifically but can also become an emotional tragedy for a family."

Waiting for relatives and broken hopes

Every moment is difficult for the families touched by this accident. A mother said that she had taken a last selfie with her daughter at 11:03 am on the day of the accident, and now, at the same time, she was called to the hospital to give DNA samples. This coincidence became unbearable for her.

The FSL team is on 24x7 duty. DNA samples are being taken from the relatives and matched with the remains of the bodies. Extreme accuracy is necessary in the investigation process because many bodies have completely mixed with each other.

Kasauti Bhawan has become a center of identification

The 'Kasauti Bhawan' of Ahmedabad Civil Hospital has currently turned into a scientific battlefield. Not only are scientific tests being conducted here, but every report can give closure to a family. Doctors say that as the matching is done, the bodies will be handed over for respectful cremation.

This accident has become a deep wound for India. But DNA technology has brought some light into this darkness. With the help of science, sensitivity, and patience, we can identify the dead and at least give their relatives an opportunity to bid them a final farewell.
