DNA Puzzle in AI171 Crash 8 Victims Still Unidentified, New Samples Taken from Families

Published: Jun 21, 2025

Ahmedabad Plane Crash: After the AI171 aircraft accident in Ahmedabad on 12 June 2025, 8 bodies have not yet been identified in forensic investigation. The DNA samples of these bodies could not match with the family, causing the investigating agencies to take samples for a second time The aircraft accident became one of India's deadliest aerial accidents, confirming or fearing the death of more than 280 people. So far 232 bodies have been identified and have been handed over to families.

DNA Matching Problem

Many bodies were completely burnt or badly damaged in the accident, which made DNA extract difficult. In such cases, DNA has to be obtained from body parts such as bone, teeth or other tissue, which is a complex and time consuming process. Forensic teams are working in Civil Hospital, Ahmedabad and BJ Medical College. These teams reported that in most cases successful matches were done, but in the case of some bodies, samples were bad or did not get favorable results.

Second sample sought from family members

The concerned families have been re -approached after DNA matching failed. They have again been sought a sample of blood or saliva, so that the dead bodies can be confirmed through cross-verification. A sense of dissatisfaction has also emerged among the family. Some people alleged that they are not being given complete information and the remains of the body are incomplete. A family said, "We need a full body, not pieces. It is a question of funeral."

Role of administration and government

The Gujarat government and the central government have directed forensic and administrative officials to make the process as soon as possible and transparent as possible. A high-level helpline has been started, so that families can get updated information. According to the Ministry of Home Affairs, more than 1000 DNA samples are being examined, and the final figure of the dead will be released only after DNA matching.

Forward procedure

Now forensic teams are removing DNA from the samples taken again and matching them with the samples of the dead bodies. This process may take a few days, but the authorities are confident that all the bodies can be identified.Experts believe that the identity of burnt or damaged bodies always has to be additional precautions, and it is natural to take time.

  • The 8 victims of the Ahmedabad accident have not yet been identified.
  • DNA samples are being taken again from family members due to not having mail.
  • The government and forensic agencies are working fast so that the identity of the bodies can be completed and handed over to the family members.
