Monsoon Fury UP Cities Submerged, Orange Alerts Sweep West India, Himachal Faces Landslide Threat

Published: Jul 06, 2025

National News: Monsoon has gained significant momentum across the country, and its impact is turning into a disaster in several northern states. Torrential rains have severely affected daily life, especially in Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Odisha. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings of heavy to very heavy rainfall for the next 4–5 days.

Waterlogging Cripples Cities in Uttar Pradesh

Since Saturday night, heavy rainfall has lashed several cities in Uttar Pradesh. In urban areas such as Aligarh, Meerut, and Mathura, roads were submerged under 2 feet of water. This has brought vehicular movement to a complete halt, with many residents confined to their homes. The IMD has forecasted continued rainfall in the region for the next three days and has advised citizens to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel.

Himachal Pradesh Battles Landslides, Floods, and Cloudbursts

The situation in Himachal Pradesh is particularly grave. The state has reported around 43 deaths and 37 people missing over the past two weeks due to rain-related incidents. Landslides and sudden floods in mountainous regions have severely impacted transportation and communication. Rivers in the region are flowing above the danger mark. The IMD has warned of extremely heavy rainfall in parts of the state on July 6.

Red Alert in Madhya Pradesh, Odisha Reels Under Water

A red alert has been issued for Madhya Pradesh on July 6, where continuous downpours have led to overflowing rivers. In Odisha, many districts are experiencing severe waterlogging, disrupting traffic and prompting the closure of schools and colleges.

Orange Alert for Multiple States

The IMD has issued an orange alert for July 6 in the following states: Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Goa, and the coastal areas of West Bengal and Karnataka. These regions are expected to witness heavy to very heavy rainfall.

Rain to Continue Till July 10

According to the IMD, eastern Uttar Pradesh, western Rajasthan, Haryana, Chandigarh, Punjab, Jammu and Kashmir, and Uttarakhand will experience intermittent heavy rains until July 10. On July 6, very heavy rainfall is expected in Jammu. Meteorologist Naresh Kumar explained that this weather pattern is being intensified by the convergence of wind systems from central and northeastern India.

This year’s monsoon has brought both relief and devastation. While it has renewed hopes among farmers, it has become a crisis for the general public in many states. Rescue teams have been put on high alert, and citizens are urged to remain cautious and adhere to the IMD’s safety advisories.
