National News: In a major step towards streamlining the paddy procurement process in Punjab, the state government has launched a new initiative aimed at making the system more transparent, efficient, and farmer-friendly. Under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, a special Cabinet Sub-Committee (Group of Ministers—GoM) has been constituted to oversee preparations and ensure the smooth implementation of procurement operations before the Kharif 2025 season.
First Meeting Held in Chandigarh, Chaired by Agriculture Minister
The sub-committee held its first official meeting on Tuesday in Chandigarh, with Agriculture Minister Gurmeet Singh Khudian presiding over the proceedings. Other key attendees included Food and Civil Supplies Minister Lal Chand Kataruchak, Transport Minister Laljit Singh Bhullar, and Water Resources Minister Barinder Kumar Goyal.
“Procurement Should Be Hassle-Free for Farmers”
Following the meeting, Minister Barinder Goyal emphasized the government’s commitment to simplifying the procurement process:
“Our top priority is to streamline paddy procurement. We want to ensure that farmers face no obstacles while selling their crops and receive timely payments. This subcommittee is a decisive move in that direction.”
Punjab: A Pillar of India’s Food Security
Punjab has long served as a critical contributor to the nation’s food grain reserves, especially during the Kharif season (June–October), when paddy is the dominant crop. The state accounts for nearly 10–12% of India’s total rice production, ranking alongside West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh among the top rice-producing states.
Infrastructure Development Also on the Fast Track
The initiative is not limited to procurement reforms. The government is also focusing on improving agricultural infrastructure. Recently, Agriculture Minister Gurmeet Singh Khudian laid the foundation stone of a new grain market in Saneta village, Mohali. This modern mandi will offer enhanced storage facilities, promote pricing transparency, and streamline trading activities for farmers.
On the occasion, the minister remarked, “Safe post-harvest storage is as vital as the crop yield itself. Our aim is to support farmers comprehensively at every stage of the agricultural cycle.”
