BJP MP and actor Ravi Kishan spoke in the Lok Sabha during Zero Hour on Wednesday, calling for a law to control food prices at eateries across the country. He highlighted that prices and portion sizes for the same dish vary widely between restaurants, hotels, and roadside dhabas.
He explained that a samosa may cost one price at a dhaba and a different amount at a restaurant—and even the size differs. For example, a dal tadka might be priced at 100 in one place, 120 in another, and as high as 1,000 in a hotel. Kishan said while Prime Minister Narendra Modi has introduced many reforms, the eating-out sector has not received sufficient attention.
Demand for Regulation of Food Prices
Ravi Kishan urged the government to draft a law ensuring standard pricing, quality, and portion size of food items. He emphasized that customers deserve meals that are both high in quality and affordable. He added that this regulation would help unifying food costs across all types of eating joints.
Inconsistent Pricing Hurts Consumers
According to Ravi Kishan, the lack of consistency in food pricing and serving size causes confusion and unfairness. He believes customers often pay more without assurance of quality or correct quantity. He stressed that regulatory measures are necessary to protect consumer interests.
Another MP Raises Mining Concerns
Also speaking in the House, BJP MP Damodar Agarwal from Bhilwara, Rajasthan, brought up illegal mining and blasting by Jindal Saw Ltd. He claimed this activity has caused ecological damage and pollution. Agarwal said protests have failed to stop mining and demanded central government action to halt these operations.
