National News: The 7-day remand of Bikram Majithia will end today. His residences in Amritsar and Chandigarh were raided by the Vigilance Bureau on June 25. He was arrested after the evidence was found against him. The Shiromani Akali Dal leader will appear in Mohali court today, i.e., on June 2, after his seven-day remand ended. Also, the police have taken the president of Shiromani Akali Dal, Sukhbir Badal, into custody. He was taken into custody in Mohali. Badal was going to the Amb Sahib Gurudwara.
Majithia has filed a petition in the Punjab and Haryana High Court. He demands the cancellation of the remand order and believes that the arrest is illegal. The High Court will hear his petition on July 3rd.
The Background
On June 25, the Vigilance Bureau had filed a case against Bikram Majithia. The bureau sued Majithia for the 54 crore disproportionate asset case. This was followed by the many raids conducted in Amritsar and Chandigarh residences of several Majithias. During Majithia's arrest in Amritsar, the bureau discovered 29 mobile phones, 5 laptops, 3 iPads, 8 diaries, and 2 desktops.
Vigilance Bureau's statement
According to the bureau, cash transactions worth 161 crore have been found by Bikram Majithia between 2007 and 2009. During this period, 141 crores of income have been disclosed from foreign shell companies, and the purchase of property worth 190 crores has been done. This is not found to be legitimate by the bureau.
