Edgbaston Conquered, as India records biggest away win

Published: Jul 07, 2025

Sports News: India defeated England in the second match of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy at Edgbaston, Birmingham, and leveled the series 1-1. The visitors achieved a historic feat as they recored their biggest away win. India set a massive 608-run target for the hosts after taking a 180-run lead in the first innings. Skipper Shubman Gill was declared the man of the match for scoring a mammoth 430 runs in the test. He scored 269 in the first innings, followed by an equally good 161 in the second. Defending 608 runs was never a huge task for the Indian bowlers. Sublime display of test bowling by Mohammad Siraj and Akash Deep meant that the hosts were in big trouble throughout.

India's new record

With the nation's first win at Edgbaston under the leadership of Shubman Gill, India created a new record for themselves. By defeating England by a massive 336 runs, the hosts recorded their biggest away win (in terms of runs). The charge was led by the skipper himself, who, again, was well supported by his bowlers. India took 20 wickets in the match and comfortably outplayed England in both innings.

England's Jamie Smith was the highest run-scorer for England in the second innings as well (88), after an immaculate 184* in the first innings.

A personal best for India's opening bowlers

A unique record was created by India's opening bowlers Akash Deep and Siraj. The two right-arm pacers accounted for an impressive 17 wickets together, which is the most by any opening pair of bowlers in a test match. Siraj, who took a six-fer in the first innings, was well complemented by Akash, who took four wickets. It can't be denied that it was Akash Deep's best bowling figures in a test.

The Bengal bowler scalped six precious wickets in the second innings, taking a total of 10 in the match. Siraj managed a wicket in the second innings.

What's next for Team India?

After an immaculate display of test cricket at Edgbaston, India will now play at the Home of Cricket, the iconic Lord's. With the series leveled, both teams would look to take the all-important lead, which raises the stakes even higher. Although Captain Gill confirmed Jasprit Bumrah's return in the next test, it will be interesting to see India's team combination at Lord's. The much anticipated test will begin on Wednesday, 9th July.
