Gukesh humbles Carlsen again, Beats World number 1 on day 2 of Grand Chess Tour

Published: Jul 04, 2025

Sports News: India's chess sensation Gukesh Dommaraju, who beat world no. 1 Magnus Carlsen in the Norway Chess tournament, has outplayed him once again. The win came late on Thursday, July 3rd. In the sixth round of the Super United Rapid and blitz chess tournament in Zagreb, Gukesh registered his fifth consecutive win. This win has taken him to ten points out of the twelve possible points. The Indian now has a two-point lead over his nearest opponent, Duda Jan-Krzysztof of Poland, and is placed at number 1 in the points table.

Gukesh humbles Carlsen again!

After his loss to the Indian chess grandmaster for the second time, Carlsen was seen low on confidence. Speaking to the reporters, he said, No, I've played kind of poorly the whole tournament, and this time I got soundly punished. I think I had a very, very nice position. He took his chance to open up a position with C6. After that it was a little bit like earlier, where I got short of time. I can't really handle it that well. And he found a lot of really, really good moves. And I think he did that part very well."

"I think I had one kind of last chance at some point to bail out to something that was very draw-ish. And I thought, well, let's continue playing. And then a couple of minutes later, I was pretty hopelessly lost. So, it was poor, but all credit to Gukesh. He's playing well, and he's taking his chances too,” he said.

A Victory to Cherish

Although Magnus had a king pawn opening, the Indian master managed a perfect counterplay. Answering all the questions Carlsen threw at him, Gukesh completed the win in 49 moves. Carlsen came up with an ugly tactic to waste the time, yet was unable to achieve his motive. Gukesh calmly played his moves and outplayed the world number 1 once again. Not to forget that Gukesh had already beaten Nodirbek Abdusattorov of Uzbekistan and Fabiano Caruana earlier in the day.

"I am not enjoying chess."

After the defeat, the world number 1 came up with a shocking statement. He said, Honestly, I am not enjoying playing chess at all right now. I don't feel any flow at all when I'm playing. I'm constantly hesitating, and it's just really poor right now.” The two rivals will face off again in two more matches.
