WTC Final 2025 Winner to Receive 49.29 Crore, RunnerUp 21.62 Crore

Published: Jun 13, 2025

Sports News:  The ICC has announced a substantial increase in the prize money for the 2023–2025 World Test Championship (WTC) final, set to be held at Lord's, London, from June 11 to 15, 2025. The winning team will receive a record $3.6 million (approximately 49.29 crore), while the runner-up will earn $2.1 million (around 21.62 crore). This marks a significant rise from the previous cycle, reflecting the ICC's commitment to enhancing the prestige of Test cricket.

ICC's Record Prize Money for WTC Final 2025

In a bid to elevate the status of Test cricket, the ICC has more than doubled the prize money for the WTC final. The winning team will take home $3.6 million, a substantial increase from the $1.6 million awarded to Australia in the 2023 final. The runner-up will receive $2.1 million, surpassing the previous runner-up prize of $800,000. This decision underscores the ICC's efforts to prioritize and promote the traditional format of the game.

Prize Distribution Among Participating Teams

  • The total prize pool for the 2023–2025 WTC cycle is $3.8 million. In addition to the finalists, the following teams will receive prize money based on their standings:
  • Third Place (India): $1.44 million (approximately 12.32 crore)
  • Fourth Place (New Zealand): $1.2 million (around 10.56 crore)
  • Fifth Place (Pakistan): $1.2 million (10.56 crore)
  • Sixth Place (West Indies): $1.2 million (10.56 crore)
  • Seventh Place (Bangladesh): $1.2 million (10.56 crore)
  • This distribution ensures that all participating teams are rewarded for their performances throughout the championship cycle.

Significance of the Prize Money Increase

The substantial increase in prize money reflects the ICC's recognition of the growing importance of Test cricket in the global sporting landscape. By enhancing financial incentives, the ICC aims to attract top talent to the format and maintain its relevance amidst the rising popularity of shorter formats like T20 cricket.

Reactions from Players and Officials

Australian captain Pat Cummins expressed pride in defending their title and acknowledged the team's efforts over the past two years. South Africa's captain, Temba Bavuma, emphasized their ambition to secure the country's first ICC title, highlighting the significance of the venue and the format. Both teams are poised to compete fiercely for the prestigious title and the substantial financial rewards. The increased prize money for the WTC final 2025 not only elevates the stakes for the participating teams but also signals a positive shift towards valuing Test cricket. As Australia and South Africa prepare to face off at Lord's, the enhanced rewards add an extra layer of excitement and anticipation to the
match.
