Moatsu Festival Nagaland 2026 falls on Friday, May 1, 2026. Mark that date. But here is something most websites get wrong. The celebration actually runs from April 30 to May 2. The main event happens on May 1. The carnival starts on April 30 evening. The concert ends things on May 2 night.
I learned this the messy way. Flew into Dimapur once. Booked my return flight for May 2 morning. Missed the closing ceremony completely. Sat at the airport feeling stupid. Do not make my mistake.
Three days.
-
April 30 – Moatsu Carnival (evening)
-
May 1 – Main festival + Ancha tradition + Moatsu Mung Concert
-
May 2 – Closing events and cultural performances
Chuchuyimlang Village is the place to be. The Nagaland government named it the "Moatsu destination village" back in 2000 . That means this village does it bigger than anywhere else.
Why This Festival Matters (And Why You Should Care)?

The Ao tribe celebrates Moatsu after sowing seeds. Farmers finish planting. They wait for rain. That waiting period becomes a party. Think about it. You work the fields for weeks. Your back hurts.

Your hands are raw. Then you stop. You eat. You sing. You dance. That is Moatsu. Not a tourist show. Not a photo opportunity. A genuine harvest break.
The festival has three main parts:
-
Purification rituals – cleaning the community
-
Feasting – sharing what you grew
-
Prayers for a good harvest – asking nature for help
The Ancha Tradition – The One Thing You Cannot Miss
Most Ao villages celebrate Moatsu alone. Chuchuyimlang does something different. They invite other tribes. This is called "Ancha".
Here is how it works. Chuchuyimlang sends messengers to neighboring villages. Konyak tribe. Phom tribe. Chang tribe. Sangtam tribe. All get invited.
Those guests travel to Chuchuyimlang. They bring their own songs. Their own dances. Their own food. Everyone shares.
Why this matters – Nagaland has 16 major tribes. They do not always get along. Old rivalries exist. Land disputes happen. But during Moatsu, they sit together. Eat together. Laugh together.
I saw this once. A Konyak elder and an Ao elder. Both in their seventies. Both carrying traditional tattoos on their faces. They sat on bamboo mats. Shared rice beer from the same cup. That image stays with you.
What Happens on May 1, 2026 – The Full Schedule?
Morning (around 9 AM)
The village chairman opens the festival. Traditional prayers happen first. Elders speak. Then the guest of honor arrives.
This year, Y. Patton (Deputy Chief Minister of Nagaland) will be the Guest of Honour. Abu Metha (Advisor to Chief Minister) will attend as Special Guest.
Midday
Cultural troupes perform. Not polished Bollywood style dancing. Real village groups. Men in white mhoushu (traditional shawls). Women in handwoven skirts. They stomp the ground. They chant old songs. Some songs are hundreds of years old.
Afternoon
Tug of war competition. Two teams fight. Dimapur area group vs Kohima group. Simple game. But the shouting and cheering get wild.
Evening – 6 PM onward
The Moatsu Mung Concert (3rd edition) starts at Anü Mai Amphitheatre. Local artists perform. This year's featured artists include Keneisenuo Sorhie and Aseno Metha.
Entry is free. Yes, free. No ticket needed.
There is also an online solo contest running before the festival. Ao folk songs or folk fusion only. Winner gets 10,000. Plus a chance to perform at the concert.
The Big Surprise – 1000 Angami Guests Coming in 2026
News just broke. 1000 delegates from the Angami tribe will attend Moatsu 2026.
The Angami Public Organization accepted the invitation from Ao Senden (Ao tribe's apex body). They are bringing 1000 people. All in traditional attire.
They leave Kohima at 4 AM on May 2. Assemble at Alichen in Mokokchung. Dress up there. Then join the celebrations.
Important rule – Angami delegates must avoid alcohol that day. Strict instruction from the organizers.
Getting to Chuchuyimlang – The Honest Travel Guide
Nearest airport – Dimapur Airport (DMU)
From Dimapur to Mokokchung – 120 km. Takes 4 hours by cab. The road winds through hills. Some patches are bad. Really bad. Your phone will lose signal. Carry snacks.
From Mokokchung to Chuchuyimlang – Another 45 minutes by local taxi or shared Sumo.
Total travel time from Dimapur airport to Chuchuyimlang – 5 to 6 hours. Without breaks. Plan accordingly.
Pro tip – Reach Dimapur on April 30 morning. Spend the night in Mokokchung town. Then go to Chuchuyimlang early on May 1. Do not try to do it all in one day. You will be exhausted.

Where to Stay – No Luxury, Just Real?
Homestays are your only real option. Chuchuyimlang has no hotels.
Mokokchung town has a few guesthouses. But during Moatsu, rooms fill up by mid-April.
What to expect from a homestay
-
A mattress on the floor or a simple bed
-
Shared bathroom (maybe outside the house)
-
Home cooked food (rice, pork, bamboo shoot, dal)
-
No AC (you do not need it, nights are cool)
-
No room service
Cost – Roughly 800 to 1500 per night. Includes breakfast and dinner usually.

Booking – Call the Chuchuyimlang Village Council directly. Their number is available through the Nagaland Tourism office. Do not rely on booking websites. Most homestays are not listed online.
What to Pack – Practical List?
Must bring
-
Inner Line Permit (ILP) – Cannot enter Nagaland without it. Non-negotiable. Apply online through the Nagaland government portal. Print two copies. Carry them everywhere.nbsp;
-
Cash – No ATMs in Chuchuyimlang. The nearest ATM is in Mokokchung. Bring enough for 3 days. 5000 to 7000 is safe.
-
Power bank – Electricity can be unreliable. So can phone charging points.
-
Torch – Streets are dark after 7 PM. No streetlights in the village.
-
Mosquito repellent – You are in a farming village. Enough said.
-
Modest clothes – Cover your shoulders and knees. The village is conservative. Especially during festivals.
-
Raincoat or umbrella – May is the start of pre-monsoon showers. It might rain.
Leave behind
-
Heels or fancy shoes – You will walk on mud and grass
-
Expensive jewelry – No lockers in homestays
-
Expectation of luxury – This is not a resort
What to Eat (And What to Avoid)?
Try these
-
Smoked pork with bamboo shoot – The signature dish of Nagaland
-
Rice beer (Zutho) – Traditional fermented drink. Mild. Earthy. Served in bamboo mugs.
-
Axone (fermented soybean) – Strong smell. Stronger taste. An acquired taste but locals love it.
-
Fresh anishi (dried yam leaves) – Vegetarian option that actually has flavor
Avoid if
-
You are a strict vegetarian – Options will be very limited. Most dishes use pork or beef stock .
-
You have a weak stomach – Fermented foods can upset first-timers. Start with small portions.
One honest warning – Pork fat is celebrated here. Not trimmed. Not reduced. Big chunks of fat. If you do not eat fat, stick to the rice and dal.
The Inner Line Permit – Do Not Skip This
Every visitor from outside Nagaland needs an ILP.
How to get it
-
Apply online through the Nagaland ILP portal
-
Documents needed: ID proof, passport photo, travel itinerary
-
Processing time: 2 to 3 days
-
Cost: Around 200
-
Valid for: 15 to 30 days depending on your request
Foreign tourists – Need to apply through the Ministry of Home Affairs. Tougher process. Start at least 3 weeks before travel.
Carry printed copies – Digital copies on your phone might not be accepted at checkposts. Officers want paper.
Costs – What You Will Actually Spend ?

Photography – Yes, But Ask First
The village is stunning. Morning light on the terraced fields. Faces of elders with traditional tattoos. Children in colorful shawls.
Rule – Always ask before taking someone's photo.
Some elders believe photos capture a part of their soul. Others simply want respect. Just ask. A simple "Photo le sakte hai?" works. Most say yes. Nod. Smile. Then click.
Do not sneak photos. Do not use zoom lenses from far away. People notice. And they do not like it.
What Nobody Tells You About Moatsu?
The alcohol thing – People drink rice beer openly during the festival. But public drunkenness is frowned upon. The Angami delegates have been told to avoid alcohol completely on May 2. Follow that lead. Drink what is offered. Do not get drunk.
The Sunday thing – Nagaland is heavily Christian. Many villages observe strict Sundays. No work. No loud music. But Moatsu is a festival. Normal Sunday rules do not apply. Still, be respectful.
The noise thing – Festivities end by 9 PM usually. Do not expect late night parties. The village sleeps early. You should too.
The rain thing – May 1 is the start of monsoon pre-season. It might pour. It might drizzle. It might be sunny. Pack for everything.
Is Moatsu Worth Visiting?
Yes, if you
-
Want to see real tribal culture (not a tourist performance)
-
Can handle basic accommodation
-
Are okay with fermented food and pork fat
-
Want to take photos that actually mean something
No, if you
-
Need luxury hotels and room service
-
Cannot walk on uneven ground
-
Expect Bollywood style dance performances
-
Are uncomfortable with traditional rice beer drinking
Honest verdict – Moatsu is for travelers, not tourists. Tourists go to Hornbill Festival in December. Big crowds. Staged shows. Comfortable hotels. Moatsu is smaller. Rougher. More real.
