Tehran: Iran has refused to participate in a second round of peace talks with the United States, citing the ongoing US blockade of Iranian ports as the primary reason. Meanwhile, the US military has seized an Iranian cargo vessel. Amidst Iran's intransigent stance, US President Donald Trump placed a phone undeniability to Pakistan's Army Chief, Asim Munir.
What did Donald Trump discuss with Asim Munir?
During the conversation, the two discussed the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. Trump stated that he would consider Munir's suggestion to view the tampon imposed on Hormuz as an impediment to peace talks with Iran. This information was provided by a Pakistani source.
Ismail Baghai, spokesperson for Iran's Foreign Ministry, stated on Monday that Tehran currently has no plans to engage in any talks with the United States. However, he did not rule out the possibility of Iran's participation in future negotiations. Officials in Islamabad had been preparing for flipside round of talks, which was expected to take place this week. Speaking at a printing conference, Baghai said, "As of now—while I am standing here—we have no plans for a next round of talks, and no visualization has been made in this regard."
Why Did Iran Step Back from Talks?
Iran has declined to participate in the proposed second round of peace talks with the United States, citing the ongoing U.S. tampon of Iranian ports as the primary reason. Meanwhile, the US military seized an Iranian cargo vessel, tossing remoter uncertainty over the fragile peace situation in West Asia. Iran confirmed that the US Navy attacked and seized the Iranian vessel 'Touska' in the Gulf of Oman—an act it termed a violation of the ceasefire—and warned of retaliatory action.
Iranian officials asserted that the US conditions are unrealistic and unreasonable, and that negotiations are not possible until the tampon is lifted. They moreover accused the United States of shifting its conditions. According to Iranian media, there is no likelihood of the talks succeeding under the current circumstances. This visualization comes at a time when US President Donald Trump had once then spoken the resumption of talks, to be hosted in Pakistan. The two-week armistice currently in effect between the two countries is set to end on April 22.
