India is gearing up to further strengthen its Air Force. Reports suggest that the country is preparing to acquire fifth-generation super-advanced fighter jets. On Saturday, July 5, Defence Secretary R.K. Singh gave a clear indication of this. He said that India is seriously considering purchasing such high-tech jets from its friendly nations. This news is especially significant as Russian President Vladimir Putin is expected to visit India soon. This raises the big question: Which country's jet will India choose, and what kind of deal will be made?
Why Does India Need a New Fighter Jet?
India is currently working on a strategy to make its Air Force more powerful. Given the growing air strength of neighbouring countries, particularly China and Pakistan, India urgently needs a strong weapon. India is working on its own fifth-generation fighter jet, the AMCA (Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft), but it could take another 8 to 10 years before it's fully developed and enters service with the Air Force. Until then, India needs an interim solution to maintain its aerial power. The Defence Secretary clearly stated that purchasing a fifth-generation fighter jet would be a strategic move that would elevate India's strength to new heights.
F-35 vs Su-57: The Battle for India's Airspace
Although the defence secretary did not mention any specific country, reports indicate that the U.S. has offered its F-35 fighter jet to India, while Russia has proposed the Su-57 stealth jet. The Su-57 is a twin-engine, multi-role stealth aircraft featuring supersonic speed, advanced avionics, and powerful electronic warfare systems. Russia ranks it among the most advanced fighter jets globally. India had previously shown interest in the Su-57, but technical issues and partnership concerns had stalled progress. On the other hand, the American F-35 is also renowned for its stealth technology and cutting-edge features. Now India faces the question of which one to choose between the two.
Putin's Visit to India in September
Russian President Vladimir Putin is set to visit New Delhi in September 2025 for the India-Russia Summit, where significant talks on defence agreements are expected. As part of this, Russia has extended a special offer to India alongside its proposal for the Su-57 fighter jet. It has promised not only to transfer the jet's technology but also to share its source code. Moreover, Russia has offered technical assistance in India’s AMCA programme and proposed to manufacture the jets in India under the Make in India initiative. Defence experts believe that if Russia shows flexibility in this deal, the Su-57 could prove to be a game-changer for India.
Choosing a Fighter Jet is Not Just About Technology
According to defence experts, choosing a 5th-generation fighter jet is not just about technology. It is also a strategic and geopolitical decision. India has long-standing, trusted defence ties with Russia, while its defence partnership with the United States has grown rapidly in recent years. Therefore, India must make a carefully considered decision about which country to move forward with on this deal. The choice between the Su-57 and the F-35 will have a long-term impact on India’s foreign policy and defence strategy.
As of now, it is still unclear whether India will opt for the Su-57 or the F-35. Senior officials in the Ministry of Defence and the Air Force are closely studying the features, costs, and strategic advantages of both jets. Experts say that until the AMCA is ready, India needs a jet that not only boosts its air strength but also supports the indigenous AMCA programme.
