RealLife Nayak This Country Gets a Prime Minister for Just One Day

Published: Jul 02, 2025

International News: The script feels straight out of the 2001 Indian film Nayak, where a common man becomes chief minister for a day. But this time, it's happening for real—in Thailand. Suriya Juangroongruangkit, a senior minister and seasoned politician, was appointed as Thailand’s acting Prime Minister on Wednesday.

His tenure, however, will last just 24 hours. This unexpected appointment follows the court-ordered suspension of Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra, daughter of ex-PM Thaksin Shinawatra. The Thai cabinet is preparing for a major reshuffle, and Suriya’s temporary role is purely procedural yet symbolically powerful.

Why Just 24 Hours?

Suriya was appointed after the Constitutional Court ordered PM Paetongtarn’s suspension due to alleged ethical violations. The ruling came amid tensions with Cambodia. At the center of the controversy is a leaked audio clip where Paetongtarn allegedly refers to Cambodian ex-leader Hun Sen as “uncle” and labels her country’s army chief a “rival.” The court saw this as a breach of diplomatic integrity, especially during a period of regional military tension. With immediate effect, her powers were frozen, and Suriya was named interim PM.

Cambodia Border Sparks Crisis

In May, skirmishes at the Thailand-Cambodia border resulted in the death of a Cambodian soldier. Paetongtarn’s perceived closeness to Cambodia drew domestic outrage. Protesters flooded the streets, accusing her of weakening Thailand’s military. Despite initial defiance from her administration, the pressure mounted. Eventually, the court’s intervention made her position untenable. The public sentiment turned sharply against her, and her cabinet found itself in turmoil amid growing calls for nationalistic accountability.

Dynasty Under Fire Again

The Shinawatra political dynasty, once seen as Thailand’s most formidable, is again under pressure. Paetongtarn’s suspension follows her father Thaksin’s ongoing legal troubles, including royal defamation charges. Even after assigning herself a less controversial portfolio as Culture Minister, her removal from the top post signals a shrinking grip. Coalition allies have started distancing themselves. Her once-stellar approval ratings have plummeted. The latest events could mark a tipping point for her political future—and that of her family.

A Minister Becomes Meme

Suriya’s sudden one-day promotion has triggered online buzz and comparisons to fictional storylines. Memes flooded Thai social media, hailing him as the “One-Day PM,” much like India’s Nayak. Though his authority is limited, the symbolism of his appointment underscores the uncertainty gripping Thai politics. Analysts believe this reflects both institutional resilience and the chaos of coalition governance. For now, Suriya is unlikely to exercise major power—but his name is already in headlines.

Realignment Ahead for Cabinet

Thailand’s cabinet reshuffle was already on the horizon, but Paetongtarn’s exit accelerated the timeline. With the ruling Pheu Thai Party scrambling for stability, a new coalition map is in the works. Lawmakers from rival factions may now bargain harder for key portfolios. Analysts say this episode may empower the opposition, especially those demanding stricter ethical standards. The cabinet will likely pivot to more neutral faces to restore public trust and avert further protests.

From Courtroom to Crisis Mode

This political storm shows how fragile leadership can be in volatile democracies. The Shinawatra brand, once invincible, now stands vulnerable to legal and public scrutiny. The court’s firm stance also signals a judiciary less tolerant of ethical lapses. As Thailand prepares for new leadership, questions remain about the dynasty’s survival, coalition durability, and the nation’s diplomatic posture. For now, it took just one leaked tape to flip the entire power script.
