India’s maritime strength is about to grow even stronger. A powerful weapon is set to be inducted into the Indian Navy's fleet, and its range and power will leave enemies shaken. Russia is going to provide India with an upgraded 'Akula-class' nuclear submarine.
India to get submarine by 2028
This submarine is being specially prepared for the Indian Navy. Initially, it was supposed to be delivered by 2025, but the delivery has now been postponed to 2028. The deal between the two countries was signed in 2019 for around USD 3 billion. This Russian submarine will be called INS Chakra-III when it joins the Indian Navy.
To compensate for the delay in delivery, Russia has offered to equip the leased upgraded submarine with the 3M14K (SS-N-304) cruise missile. The Akula-class submarine is one of the world’s most advanced nuclear-powered attack submarines.
Specially Designed for Multi-Mission Warfare
Armed with torpedoes and cruise missiles, these submarines are designed for anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface warfare, and long-range strike missions. This is a significant step for India to strengthen its naval presence in the Indo-Pacific region.
The 3M14K Kalibr missile, which is being installed in this Russian submarine, has a range of 1,500 kilometres. Previously, India's INS Chakra-II was equipped with 3M54K missiles, which had a range of only 600 kilometres.
Submarine Strike: Kalibr Missiles to Target Enemies Underwater
These long-range Kalibr missiles will enhance India’s capability to strike enemy targets even from the depths of the ocean. Presently, the Indian Navy operates traditional diesel-electric submarines like the Scorpene-class and also has two nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarines in service.
