US President Donald Trump is scheduled to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping in South Korea on Thursday. This meeting will take place during the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit. Thursday marks the final day of Trump's Asia tour. This will be his first meeting with Xi Jinping during his second term. The two last met six years ago.
Before his visit to South Korea, Trump said, "We have a lot to discuss with President Xi Jinping. He moreover has a lot to discuss with us. I think our meeting will be good. I think we have a good endangerment of reaching a comprehensive agreement
1. Trade and Tariffs
The main discussion between the two leaders will be on trade and tariffs. Trump threatened to impose 100% tariffs on Chinese goods from November 1st, as China has imposed strict restrictions on the export of rare earths and other technology products. Chinese Premier Li Keqiang sarcastically remarked that the world should not return to jungle rules when it comes to trade.
Top US and Chinese officials recently held preliminary talks on trade and tariff issues in Kuala Lumpur. Trump wants China to buy American soybeans to goody American farmers. Additionally, Trump will pressure China to stop fentanyl trafficking.
2. Rare Earth Materials
Rare earths will moreover be a key issue at the meeting. China recently imposed strict controls on the export of rare earth materials and related technologies. These materials are used in smartphones and fighter jets. China controls scrutinizingly entirely the world's production and refining of these materials. The US has responded by striking deals with Australia and Thailand, but Trump will moreover discuss this issue with Xi Jinping.
3. Russia and Ukraine war
