Atishi Roars to Save 60 Lakh Vehicles, Demands Special Assembly Session!

Published: Jul 11, 2025

National News: Senior Aam Aadmi Party leader and Leader of Opposition in Delhi Assembly Atishi has written a letter to CM Rekha Gupta demanding a law to save old vehicles. Atishi said that removing 10-year-old cars from Delhi's roads is a direct attack on the middle class. The middle class dreams, works hard and saves to buy a car. The November 1 deadline is still hanging over the heads of these car owners. The Delhi government should immediately call a special session of the Assembly and pass a law to protect middle-class car owners. The Aam Aadmi Party will fully support this law.

The sword hanging over people's heads

Leader of Opposition in Delhi Assembly Atishi has written a letter to CM Rekha Gupta on Friday saying that I am writing this letter to you as the voice of lakhs of residents of Delhi, who are extremely upset with the recent plan of your government. Under this scheme, 10-year-old diesel and 15-year-old petrol vehicles are to be scrapped in the national capital. This proposal was implemented on July 1, but was immediately withdrawn due to public protest. Now, with a new deadline of November 1, it is again hanging like a sword over the heads of the people. If this decision is implemented, it will affect at least 60 lakh vehicles (20 lakh four-wheelers and 40 lakh two-wheelers) of the national capital.

Delhi's roads are unsafe

Atishi has told the CM that you may be new to governance, but I want to explain to you the sentiments of the people of Delhi. Buying a vehicle for a middle-class family is still a major achievement in life. They dream, plan and save money for years to buy a car. Many people buy second-hand cars. Many senior citizens take care of their cars. They use them only for short distances like going to the doctor or the nearby market. Many women see the car as a safe means of transport. Delhi's roads are unsafe. Therefore, they use cars to go to office or drop children to school. Removing 60 lakh vehicles in one go will badly affect the daily life of all these people. Buying a new car is not possible for most people.

Common man will suffer heavy loss

Atishi further said that the age of a vehicle cannot be a criterion for its scrapping. A vehicle may be only 5 years old, but it may have run 5 lakh kilometers. A vehicle may be 15 years old but may have run only 50 thousand kilometers. A vehicle may be 3–4 years old but may be spreading pollution due to very poor maintenance, while some vehicles may be well maintained even after being 10–12 years old and may not be polluting. Therefore, considering a vehicle as polluting only on the basis of age is completely unscientific and impractical. Such a decision will only benefit vehicle manufacturers, dealers, and scrappers. The common man will suffer huge losses due to this. It is important to fight pollution, but such a complete ban policy is not the solution for it. The Delhi government has said that it will go to the Supreme Court, but in the absence of any new law, the court will repeat its old order.

A new law should be made to protect vehicles

Atishi has said that the only solution to this problem is legislation. As the deadline of November 1 is near, the BJP government should bring a new law to provide relief to 10-year-old vehicles in Delhi. Now that there is a BJP government in both the Center and the state, if the government wants, this bill can be passed in a few days. For this, a special session of the Delhi Assembly can be called immediately, in which this bill can be discussed in detail. I, on behalf of the Aam Aadmi Party, assure that we will help your government in every possible way to pass this law and provide relief to millions of people of Delhi.
