I was so inspired and learnt so much that I would like to take you on a tour of my experience. Therefore, pour yourself a warm beverage, sit back and I will take you through the magic of the Orange City Nagpur Lit Fest!
What is the Orange City Nagpur Lit Fest?
We shall begin with the fundamentals before we get to the interesting particulars. You may be asking yourself, what is this festival?
An idea and story festival.
In plain English, the Orange City Nagpur Lit Fest is a huge annual festival that brings together book lovers. It’s a place where:
- Authors arrive to tell about their latest stories.
- Poets arrive to read their strong poems.
- Readers get to know their favorite writers, and new ones.
All people gather to learn, exchange ideas and enjoy the power of storytelling.
Imagine it is a giant library that has just come alive and the authors are in the room with you! It is one of the major literary events in Maharashtra, making our beautiful city famous in all the right ways.
Why "Orange City Nagpur"?
This is a fun fact! Nagpur is also known as the Orange City as it is a city where the orange crop is growing in large quantities in India. The festival has this playful and festive nickname to demonstrate that it is a source of pride in our city. The very name is thus an invitation--a luminous, juicy, and welcoming thing to all.
for the first time in the Festival: A World of Books.
It felt like entering another world as one entered the festival premises. The energy was the first thing that I noticed. They buzzed low in happy talk, intermixed with the soft rustling of pages in the book stalls.
The Incredible Book Stalls
In front of the entrance, there were rows and rows of stands of various publishing houses and bookshelves. It was a book lover’s paradise! I observed lofty heaps of new novels, gorgeous volumes of poetry, interesting and attractive children books, and so forth. The odor of fresh print and paper was all around. One could not resist the temptation of purchasing a book or two (or five!).
The Friendly Crowd
The best part was the people. People of every age—grandparents and young children with their favorite novels in their hands--swarmed around me. Everybody was smiling, everybody was talking and everybody was there because of the same reason: people loved stories. It was like an enormous house of reading.
The Core of the festival: Poetry reading: the moments that moved me.
The heartbeat of the festival was probably in the tents and halls where the poetry readings took place. This was not merely a question of reading words on a page but touching them.
The Power of Spoken Word
I took part in a session called Whispers and Roars: The Magic of Poetry. The room was packed. And then a poet came to the stage, and, taking a deep breath and uttering the first few words, she had all of us fully still and enthralled. She was not reciting, she was acting. The emotion of the poem was high and low in her voice. Her hands provided her with meaning. I would sense the happiness, depression and anticipation in her words. It was a strong sign that poetry is an art to be read aloud.

Having undergone the emotional experience of the poetry, I was prepared to learn something new. Literary lectures were the most interesting lectures in a classroom you could have ever seen, given by the writers themselves!
Discussions on Big Ideas
It was not only the way books are made, but the great ideas contained within them that made the festival. I attended a panel discussion in which three authors discussed Friendship in Modern Stories. They discussed the way friendship is represented in books on kids and teens nowadays. Their various points of views were so interesting to listen to. They got me to reconsider my friendship relationships. It is these literary debates and discussions that make the festival so witty and interesting.
The Reason Why This Festival is a Gift to Our City
Two full days of the fest made me realize that it is much more than a fun event.
Placing Nagpur on the Cultural Map.
Festivals such as the Orange City Nagpur Lit Fest prove to the world that our city is a cultural, educational and artistic place. It also draws tourists all around the nation and that is good in our city. It tells everyone that Nagpur is a City of Stories in addition to being the Orange City.
A Final Word: Until Next Year
During my time at the Orange City Nagpur Lit Fest, I exceeded all expectations. It was an emotionally charged, thought-provoking, and joyful weekend, because I was among my type of people.
It strengthened my idea that stories are our common things. They make us a little more aware of ourselves and one another. It is a magnificent festival of the written word, and it is in our own backyard.
I strongly, strongly suggest that, if you even have the slightest grain of interest in books, stories, or poetry, you put your name on the list of next year’s event. It is not a festival, it is experience. I am sure I will, and I will find another favorite book and will get carried away by another lovely poem.
